Carl Barat completes work on solo album
Former Libertine says album is 'in the can'
Carl Barat has said that he has finished work on his debut solo album.

The singer/guitarist and former member of The Libertines and Dirty Pretty Things has not yet revealed a release date for the album, despite completing it.

Describing the album as "in the can", he confirmed to BBC Newsbeat that piano featured heavily in the recording process.

"It's a bit different," he said. "It's a bit older – like myself really. It's kind of naked, kind of stripped down. It's more piano-based."

As well as working on his solo career, Barat has been starring alongside Sadie Frost in the play Fool For Love, at London's Riverside Studios venue.

Watch a video interview (right) with Carl Barat describing his new solo album.

He is planning to release the album around the same time as the tour, and has warned fans to "expect the unexpected". Alongside the album, Barat will release a book, a collection of memoirs, which he hopes will "tickle your curiosity".

Barat has set up a new Twitter page and MySpace, where he is expected to premiere new music over the coming weeks.

From his Myspace:
"Dear all

Firstly may I wish you all well and thank you for you patience over the last few months. During this time I have been mightily busy compiling an album for your pleasure, which I very much hope you will love. As do I.

It seems to have been quite a while since we were last together. It will be splendid to be on the road again and for the first time on my own. The album is different to say the least… so expect the unexpected (within reason). Please look out for my new tracks that I will be posting online imminently and with trepidation I look forward to your reactions.

I havent been totally lazy in this extended break, I have worked on a film with my good friend Mark Donne ('The Rime Of The Modern Mariner') which will be touring the film festivals this year, I did a stretch in the theatre earlier in the year and wrote a couple of tracks for Russell Brands new film 'Get Him To The Greek'

Amid this self imposed exile I have also been working on a book of memoirs that I trust will tickle your curiosity if not simply stand to amuse you and invoke laughter, tears and torment (not necessarily in that order).

Obviously there is the small matter of a few Libertines shows in August too. Its been a heartwarming experience being back with those fellas again and those shows are going to be something special.

I very much hope to see you all when my tour kicks off in October where I will be playing a mix of new and old tunes Keep checking my sites for details of all shows but the first few are below and on sale tomorrow. I will be adding a very special set of French dates and some shows in Italy too but those wont be anounced for a little while.

I'm expected the album and book to be released in October post Libertines and pre headline dates. In the meantime I have set up a twitter twitter.com/carlbaratmusic and renamed this myspace.com/carlbarat in order to keep everyone updated with what I'm doing.

There will also be a brand New website coming very soon and I will be sending a little prezzie out to everyone on the mailing list.

Love Carl x
