Chanel Haute Couture F/W 10.11 Paris

I love the Empire style of most looks. Some of those coats are really really lovely.

The music played at the show was Small Town by Lou Reed and John Cale according to Vogue Paris

I am really not getting this collection. The shapes and fabrics are all wrong. Although the workmanship behind it is great, it doesn't justify the fact that the garments themselves look either boring or terrible.

Only thing I liked was the white dress with the beads. But that looked like it belonged to another collection entirely.

Disappointed. :/

The details on the jewelry pieces and some of the dresses are just so breath taking.

what i like most about chanel is the details - they're always nice to see.
the collection isn't bad but some outfits look old and tacky... and the accessories make them worse.
karl needs to make a cohesive collection again... f/w 06 is a great example to follow.

The setting is epic and breathtaking...

And the clothes?

They make me think of Russia, and Anna Karenina, and long sweeping journeys on the Trans-Siberian railway.

Though assuredly not my taste and not Lagerfeld's best, there is a beautifully romantic nostalgia - an old-order charm, if you will - to them.

You nailed the part I loved most about this collection. I felt emotionally attached because there was this whole story setting. It was exotic, yet classic. I may be in the minority, but I loved the setting and music too. It appropriately captured the grandeur and what else would you expect from Karl? It's not like the iceberg was any less opulent. Honestly, this is my favorite collection from this couture season.

I particularly adored the final piece Freja wore (before the bride piece). She looked like she was covered in little stars in that dress. It certainly looked amazing in motion. My favourite piece, thus far. :)

Oh the detailings are splendid. They have this certain nostalgia to them...

The silhouettes, the details, the stitching, the embellishments, the beaty! In complete honesty, I have never seen a collection by any designer that I have so wanted to have for myself!

About the notion that this isn't haute couture? That has been explained many times in this thread already and I would like to add that this most definitely does not show any less meticulous craftsmanship than Dior, Givenchy, or whoever you perceive to be real couture.

Maybe he should just retire and they should hire Hedi Slimane as creative director...
I want Hedi Slimane to completely change Chanel!

Heres my list of designers who should be at Chanel... their style may not be close to Chanel at all but if I was in charge of hiring someone new I'd hire one of them just because they're cool :D

Hedi Slimane
Tom Ford
Riccardo Tisci
Raf Simons

I found it a little different, but after watch the show, and the Hd's good, i fell in love with the whole collection ... and i think it would be harsh to find a replace for Karl, and by the way i don't think any of these names would do good at chanel, Hedi and tisci in special.

Whoever replaces Karl would have to be someone who understood the way he has capitalised on Chanel's heritage. Look what happened at Valentino with Alessandra Facchinetti.

I think Hedi could be a very interesting alternative to Karl. Karl's best work for the house always tended to be his more minimal productions...pristine white sets, blinding light, etc.

And I think that's what Chanel is in desperate need of currently. I don't think the house can suffer through many more of these monstrous collections that are really nothing more than gimmicks that should never have been materialized, and they only were materialized because..."he's Karl."

Hedi, I believe, could strip the house bare...no more baubles, no more sequins, no more glitz, not more...faux fur. Whittle it all down to the essentials and really bring the house back to its original message: simple, comfortable clothes for an entirely contemporary woman. Somehow Coco made that creed startlingly revolutionary, and I believe Hedi could similarly bring about some very prolific changes to this legendary, albeit slightly damaged, house.

^^All the more reason, no? I mean...what made Coco so ground breaking was introducing women to menswear for the first time. Why not bring back that mentality? I think it would do wonders for the house...after several years of horrifically ultra-femme flou from the Kaiser.

Alternatively, I think the house's other option would be to give the house back to a woman...which another element the house is desperately missing. I've said it before, and it may seem far-fetched at first, but I really warmed up to the idea of Alessandra Facchinetti at Chanel. It's no secret I adored her work at Valentino, and I miss her dearly. From only three seasons worth of work, I saw such refinement. She had a flawless ability to make traditional lady-like style seem somehow so new, so fresh, so easy and so modern.

chanel as we see it today, is karl's creation. I really can't imagine anyone taking over his "work".

I don't love the general feel of the collection, or its colours, and yet I would wear over half of the outfits. The dress with the tear-drop shoulders is my favourite piece. The detailing is exquisite! I also adore the hair and make-up, simple yet glamourous.

Why all this Karl bashing?! There is no Chanel without Karl; he has made Chanel his own. To be very honest, I like Chanel's collections more since he revived the brand. He stays true to the brand and yet pushes it forward like no one else can. Hence why Chanel is one of the greatest fashion houses in the world. Because Karl got it there.

Yes, he has his quirks, but what designer doesn't? I'll gladly take the lionheads, icebergs and see-through purses, if they come along with brilliantly designed and executed collections.

^ Yes, even if you don't care for him or this or that, his genius and accomplishments have been irrefutable over many years...there will be no successor... B)
