CHANEL IN COURT
CHANEL was in court this week after being accused of counterfeiting and "abusive termination of [ongoing] contractual relations" by one of its suppliers, World Tricot, which is seeking £1.3 million for breach of contract and £2.3 million for counterfeiting. In a case which Chanel's attorney Gerard Delile says is a ploy by World Tricot to garner publicity for its own commercial benefit, the supplier accused the French fashion house of producing a sample of a vest it had proposed last year and had rejected. Chanel denies all charges and is in turn suing World Tricot for £340,000 for moral prejudice and tarnishing its image. After nearly four hours of testimony during which the commercial court's presiding judge, Jean-Pierre Lucquin, struggled to compare unusual evidence comprising a sample of white crochet and a crochet Chanel vest, he proposed that the complex case be tried in front of a mediator. Both companies must now agree to the mediation before January 20 or the case will have to be tried again. "We are happy with the proposition, but it must happen very fast or else World Tricot will not survive," said Solange Doumic, attorney for the private company which also supplies knitwear to Dior, Christian Lacroix, Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy and Kenzo.
