CHANEL THREATENS COURT ACTION

DON'T mess with Chanel. Central Saint Martins student designer Sophia Amanzi-George, who presented her MA collection during London Fashion Week, has been threatened with legal action by the French powerhouse for daring to feature its famous double-C logo. Inspired by modern African and black culture, the Afro-German designer created voluminous tunic dresses and ribboned leggings in bold prints, but she had no intention of ripping anyone off. "I bought the prints at Brixton Market, so I luckily can't get into trouble for actually creating it myself," she says. "I wanted to approach African culture in a different way – rather than the traditional leather fringe-and-tribal prints look, I wanted a more modern interpretation. The C logo was an attempt to be humorous about the use of fake labels in the 'bling' culture." Not funny, apparently. Amanzi-George must now give up the piece, her sketches and any rights to images featuring it. But this little set back is bound not to affect her career as a whole. Inspired by a six-month work placement with Alexander McQueen, she is keen to land a job in a major fashion house when she leaves Saint Martins later in the year. "He was a really nice person," she says of McQueen. "Not intimidating at all – I really enjoyed working there." (March 11 2005, AM)

In the end, it'll leave her with more exposure and people interested to see what the buzz around her work is. Good for her:flower:

Chanel attorneys are bored. They tried to get me in couple of years ago because of my birth middle name Chanell.

So funny.

wha...???...that's crazy happiness...

Yeah! It was crazy! I had to send the attorneys copies of my birth certificate and everything! Pure boredom if you ask me.

CHANEL® is insane. they'll sue anyone for anything. i'm surprised that their lawyers aren't filing against the fashion spot this second for even featuring the name CHANEL® anywhere on the boards. hell, saks fifth avenue and neiman marcus ads in magazines (and in their seasonal lookbooks) can't even feature CHANEL® product or the CHANEL® name at all without tons of ®'s and copyright text everywhere.

but i do think that it was stupid of sofia amanzi to use the CHANEL® logo in her collection, ironically or not.

Brian, you've got to be kidding me! Saks and Neiman can't either? I guess....

WHAT!? That is nuts. Wonder what they'll do to my friend whose name is Chanel and wants to be a model...

In my own experience, LVMH are just as lawsuit crazy as Chanel (I have the 10 page fax to prove it! ) but I was totally prepared to stand my ground and let them take me to court. They backed down  :innocent:

I think this designer knew exactly what she was doing....

That's ridiculous. I know at least two people whose real birth names are Chanel.

...wonder when they'll be sued...:innocent:

In terms of her using their logo, though, I think that's foolish, on her part - that's a copyrighted logo, for sure...so that was playing with fire...when it's something that public, that would definitely be noticed...

Should people who were born before Chanel start sueing( or have familes sueing) them for infringement too?

^ U gotta be kidding, my best friend in high school had Chanel as her first name.

It's silly that Chanel is sueing her...but she probably should have known better.
