Even though the off-the-shoulder style doesn't really suit Charlene's frame, I do rather like that black gown with the gold banding.
I've finally figured out what her style reminds me of: the early 1990s, like from 1991-1993. During that time, everything was "flowy," the shape of the body was hidden rather than defined, and gowns were shapeless in general (the over-the-top 1980s theatre was gone, but so was the glamour) and suits were longer and longer (long jackets, long skirts). It wasn't an atrocious fashion period, but not very memorable either. (I personally think 90s fashion came in its own circa 1996-1997). And that sums up Charlene's style for me: not horrible, but often not memorable either.
Also, it's worth noting that Monaco wasn't considered glamourous before Grace Kelly got there. After Rainier married her, he turned into the cosmopolitan place it is today. Before he married though, it wasn't considered a luxury place. It was just seen a seedy fishing outcrop with outdated nobility running it. So I think it's unfair to say that Charlene is ruining it with her lack of style, when Rainier's own family (including himself) pre-Grace weren't considered anything important on any scene before Grace arrived.
