Totally agree.
Not to mention the overuse of the word "icon". The girl wears a few nice outfits and she's an "icon"? Hardly! Not to mention the fact that she couldn't dress herself to save her life. Don't get me wrong, been a fan since the beginning, but I'm not on board with many of her fashion choices.
We have the media to thank for her "fashion icon" title, but there isn't much to back it up; that's for sure.
I think we've had the discussion a while back of whether she's a fashion icon or not. I think i'm with Ladyflash on this, it's a bit of an OTT statement for cheryl cole, but I guess she could be a fashion icon to someone out there.
But as I've said before I don't believe you can be a fashion icon if you have a stylist. Just imo.

To me fashion icon = someone who's style people worship. Lots of people emulate and obsess over Cheryl's clothes and hair and makeup, so that makes her one (even if the only people who do love her style are chavs).

She's not a style icon TO YOU.
She's not even a style icon to me, but to many people she is.
Why can't it just be accepted that people have different tastes? Many people do love her, and her style, so just let them. Simply because you, or anyone else doesn't look up to her as a style icon does not mean that she is "definitely no style icon."

No no no. This isn't a matter of taste. I, for instance, don't like Kate Moss' style, however I consider her a fashion icon because she sets trends, not just follows them buying designer clothes (with the help of a stylist). Nothing separates Cheryl from the other celebs who do the same thing. Thus, not a style icon.

The weird thing with Cheryl is that a lot of the time I hate what she wears. I don't really dress like her at all. I admire people such as Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and Garance Dore much more.
However, with Cheryl I think it is more about the fact that she is SO stunningly gorgeous. And not only is she beautiful but she looks like she's a lovely grounded person. That is why i'd call her one of my idols. Purely because, I love her music and her accent and the bump on her nose! She's no trend setter but she definitely has something about her and I suppose that's what style is at the end of the day. It's not all about fashion + clothes.

Meh, I like/sometimes love Cheryl's style, but I don't think she's a fashion icon. To me, iconic is something you look back on years from now and think, "Wow, she had really good style." You can't really say Cheryl is a fashion icon because she's only really been relevant in the fashion community for the past 2 - 3 years.
Contrast that to Jackie O or Audrey Hepburn, whose styles were so distinct and are still remembered today. Princess Diana might fit in that category too. Marilyn Monroe's white dress is iconic because we ALL remember that image.
The thing is, we're all talking about Cheryl's fashion a lot because it's happening right now. We have new outfits to discuss and everything. But 10, 20 years from now, will we still be pulling up these old images and saying, "Wow, I really liked her style!" Will she still have many people talking about her outfits? To me, that's the mark of a true icon, versus someone who is just a passing fad/phase.
But everyone's definition of icon is different.
As for Cheryl... at the moment, I don't really see her achieving iconic status. First, like previously mentioned, she hasn't set any trends. Second, her style itself doesn't stand out. She looks gorgeous and great, but I don't see any of her outfits as distinctly "Cheryl", whereas I could see it with Gwen Stefani or Chloe Sveginy maybe.

The word fashion icon is slammed way too much on celebs by the press. Cheryl can dress very nice but I think she hasn't reached that stage where she can actually be considered as an icon.Doesn't mean she can't but she is only 26.

Age doesn't have anything to do with being a fashion icon, imo. Its something that comes within you to inspire others to follow your trend etc. It may be something that grows as you get older but age certainly doesn't determine if you're a fashion icon or not.
