all of you have accurately conveyed my feelings: this collection is absolutely marvelous.

galliano has once again risen up from the slings of adversity and has proved that haute couture, even though it's inaccessable to most, can indeed remain relevant.

i had a feeling things would revert back to the way they were

I'm not sure how the segway worked between the sort of 'mod' pieces and the 'josephine' pieces. That one cropped coat is GORG but the other pieces of the 'mod' collection don't really inspire me that much. I've seen better bubble skirts though the stiffness of the crocodile makes it look interesting.

I greatly prefer the josephine dresses which are absolutely stunning. I love period clothing and I think this is extremely wearable but still full of detail and rich fabrics. Love the makeup for that section as well.

this instant-information age is a little too much at times.
imagine how things were years and years ago for fashion followers like us, who couldn't be pacified until the actual collection was in the boutiques or pieces were featured in magazines.

agreed. a lot of it does look very ready-to-wear, and quite well could make its way straight out of this show and into the boutiques next season, but this is the way haute couture used to be. in the past it wasn't all about how outrageous or how embellished or how big or how whatever you could get... look at the old haute couture collections by saint laurent. things are obviously reverting back to that, and i like it.

I know things used to be more "wearable" but, I don't know, this collection looks so RTW. I usually don't like the outrage of his collections but this is one is the extreme opposite. John Galliano always s my mind - which is probably good because it means there's still a meaning to all this.

You know, what dissappoints me most in this collection is the segway from one theme to another. He's usually a master at making the trasition so seamless, so natural. But this was almost jarring. I mean, it seemed like there were two entirely different collections here.

For some reason, even though there are pieces I love and John still leaves me amazed, it wasn't as amazed as it usually is. He could've scaled down the show and the makeup but think of the s/s 97 couture, the clothes themselves were amazing. I kind of wish that was the case here, the clothes were dramatic but still utterly wearable. John might have scaled back a little too much for my liking. Who knows, it may grow on me.

I was thinking the same thing about John 'scaling back'...one of the great things about him, at least in my opinion, was how consistent he was at being way too much.

There is such passion in his expression with fabric and makeup, in how escapist it all proved to be. Perhaps he is experimenting, looking for a fresh way to express both sides of himself. When he is over the top, it seems genuine; when scaled down, it suddenly has the slight feel of being costume, of being accurate and in proportion to the original.

Hopefully, he can find that balence. With designers being cut off at the drop of a hat, he may be one of the last in fashion to provide beautiful, messy spectacle without severe penalty. Is this just a sign o' the times?

Eh. Having seen the whole collection, it's really not that great. Why is there such a huge section in red? I mean, the color is beautiful but there are like 15 looks in the middle of the same color. And then the white dresses at the end. I don't really get it. I think the link between Edie Sedgwick and Josephine is forced and shaky, at best. I don't understand why Galliano has to be either totally over-the-top and ridiculous or totally boring and mainstream. Why can't there be a middle ground?

Did you read the rest of my post at all? I was saying that a middle ground would incorporate a little bit of the outlandish couture of the past three years with the completely sober collection he showed today. Why is that a bad thing?
