Clemente Creates Anatomically Correct Ties for Valentino
By Godfrey Deeny
June 21, 2004 @ 11:52 AM - Paris

Valentino has commissioned a striking series of ties from neo expressionist painter Francesco Clemente and the cravats turn out to be anatomically correct.

The proceeds from the ties, which feature illustrations of an well-endowed member, a padlocked heart, skull and suggestively shaped scissors, will go to Amnesty International. The Clemente prints will be used to create a limited selection of just 100 ties.

Clemente painted the four ties in a bright hued and graphic style, using his signature gradated brush strokes in light blue, yellow, pink, orange and red.

"Clemente has created symbols that are both ironic as well as explicitly erotic. Touching lightly on surrealism, the artist has evoked some of his most recurring themes: life and death, love and relationships," the house said in a statement.

Valentino got the idea for the neckties to celebrate the opening of his new boutique this Thursday, July 24 in Florence, located at Via dei Tosinghi. The new store will also host "Art for Ties," an exhibit of contemporary art inspired by ties that originated from the private collection of Antonella and Fabrizio Boggiano.

Located in the center of the city, the 2,500-square-foot, two-floor boutique, features materials such as bronzed brass, limestone, and super light glass. Its five large windows are dedicated to all of the Valentino collections including, for the first time, all of the menswear lines, Valentino, Valentino Roma, R.E.D. Valentino, Valentino Garavani accessories
