Valentino: The Last Emperor

Valentino is not an innovator, but I will agree that he is the emperor of making beautiful clothes.

i'm not really a valentino fan (his stuff is pretty but not terribly innovative). but i thought this was a good movie. it was funny in some places & poignant in others.

I saw the documentary Wednesday night in NYC. It really was great. I don't recommend movies often, but I think fashion-minded people should see it. It gives insight into the difference between fashion of the days of old and today.

And Karl Lagerfeld was hilarious. "Compared to us, everyone else is making rags."

They showed quite a few clips from this documentary on Oprah today, Valentino and his partner were also there to be interviewed by her.

This looks very interesting. I'm not quite sure I would have been as interested if there wasn't the turmoil that's going on right now at this label.

They also showed a few clips on the Charlie Rose show on PBS.

"You look a little bit too tan"
hahahahaha
I can't wai to see this film.
Good times

A RECORD, SORT OF: Matt Tyrnauer’s documentary “Valentino: The Last Emperor” has been enjoying a successful run since opening at New York’s Film Forum on March 18: it’s grossed $39,106 so far, landing it around the top of Film Forum’s premieres, and it’s being touted as the highest-grossing documentary debut of 2009 (which, three months into the year, might not be as grandiose a benchmark as it sounds.)

It’s hard to remember another documentary that has benefited from such a fortuitous confluence of high-level buzz and mass-market coverage. Valentino and Giancarlo Giammetti are at leisure to promote it full time on everything from The Oprah Winfrey Show to Charlie Rose, while Tyrnauer’s boss at Vanity Fair, Graydon Carter, did his part for the movie with the first dinner party at his second restaurant, Monkey Bar. Guests included Diane von Furstenberg, Barry Diller and Carolina and Reinaldo Herrera. The film’s seven-month, 10-festival run provided photo ops of endless premieres studded with Valentino’s starlet devotees. Tyrnauer has also left no niche unexplored: through his Web site, he’s conducting a Most Fashionable Pug contest — Valentino’s six pugs provide comic relief in the film — judged by the designer himself.

The film opens in Chicago on March 27, and in San Francisco and Los Angeles April 3, the latter with a suitably lavish opening party. As for everywhere else, a spokeswoman said, “Plans are definitely in the works to bring the movie to additional markets but specifics are still forthcoming.”

I think I have to see this.

"I would eat them".....that's brilliant!!!

Does anyone know where can I download it from? I'm not planning to waste my money in this selfish egoistic **** lmao

This is online from various torrent sites. I'm thinking of downloading it and putting it on my youtube account. But do you think these are genuine copies? I'm not sure!

^ OMG Where??

Check the uploaders list if they have good reputation or watever :P

I just watched the trailer and the interview... it's ok, I may spend my money on this xD. Seems pretty interesting haha.

I just came from watching the movie today! It was really great, and it was hilarious. Super Italian! I don't think it delved deep into his business like Avenue Marceau did, but Yves and Valentino are very different.

I enjoyed the movie. There were some touching moments where you can see how much this label was such a treasure to those involved.

This movie is so great..I encouraged everyone to see it!
It was kinda sad at the end...but I loved it!!

I just saw this last night...an absolutely wonderful movie. I just love seeing real fashion in movies...not fake fashion like "Devil Wears Prada" or "Confessions of a Shopaholic"...real fashion, real models, real personalities, real situations. It's fantastic. But more than any of that, it's just a plain good movie!

And in regards to the Alessandra affair...I went in wanting to be angry the whole time, but I just couldn't keep angry at Valentino for long. I am, by no means, any less upset about Alessandra's dismissal, it's just, I've gone from being furious about the whole situation to more...saddened. The new peddlers are just so talentless and so pathetic it's shameful. Alessandra's work, while different from the work of Valentino's, still felt true to house and, in a way, her designs felt...reverential...her work almost purified Valentino's legacy...you forgot that Valentino had made some pretty dated and tacky pieces in the past, and those pieces seemed magically erased from the heritage and all that remained in your memory were his stunning dresses. Strange, and yet, so romantic that her collections (though few) and her mere presence were able to do this. The two idiot's work does nothing but make a mockery of Valentino's 45 years in fashion. They bring out everything that was distasteful about Valentino.

Since watching the movie, I've really been thinking about the situation (not that I haven't thought about it a lot, already...and talked about it, too!). And this silly little metaphor for the whole ordeal came to mind. Valentino's 45 years was like a rich, heavy, buttery meal...but it was delicious. One of the best meals of your life. Then Alessandra came along and she was like a perfect sorbet palette cleanser. The sorbet made you feel refreshed and even a tad hungry again! A perfect meal! But now, with the two dolts as creative directors, all that's left of the wonderful dinner is a bad taste in your mouth...in fact, you now even feel sick to your stomach and all you want to do is throw up and get it all out of your system.

Also, this movie made me REALLY hate suits more than I ever have before. They're just the scum of the earth.:yuk:
