I've read the interview! Very crafty of him to say, well the gay community is all about inclusiveness so I'm hoping they'll have no problem with a straight man portraying a gay character. As if we have any say in the matter, to begin with.

Right, however, the proportions are not equal. It's not as if we have an inordinate amount of gay actors playing straight characters. Least of all really prominent roles in big budget productions. Same can't be said for vice versa.

Sure we do. They're just not all OUT gay actors. But the number of gay actors playing straight roles far exceeds the number of straight actors playing gay roles, in my opinion. There aren't even that many (major) gay roles, but there are loads of gay men (and women) in Hollywood. Kristen Stewart, Ian McKellan, Cynthia Nixon, Jim Parsons, Sarah Paulson, Jodie Foster, Matt Bomer, Neil Patrick Harris, Luke Evans, Ellen Page, being some examples of out actors regularly playing straight in major projects. And then add people like Henry Cavill, Zac Efron, John Travolta.... and those are just some of the less controversial (glass) closet cases.

i'm surprised that Anna never put Gal Gadot or Brie Larson on the cover, Both movies are huge female lead box office successes. Gal & Brie are beautiful, talented (Brie has an Oscar hello?) and yet we still stuck with Kendall

Plenty of out LGBTQ+ women have played straight characters in box office movies. Jodie Foster has two Oscars, both for playing straight women. Plus several of the actors you listed (Redmayne, Leto, Swank) played trans characters, not gay characters. That's a separate and complicated issue since in most cases an actor is required to play a trans character before and after the character starts publicly (or in some cases even privately) identifying as a trans man or woman.

It's an open secret that the Hollywood powers-that-be encourage actors and actresses to stay in the closet, manufacture false relationships, etc. Just because they've been bullied into not being openly gay in the press doesn't mean they're straight. Maybe it's unkind to speculate about specifically who on a public forum like this but in many cases these are an open secret or the actors don't address it either way.

Neil was in Gone Girl I believe and Luke played Gaston in Beauty & The Beast. I’d consider both Blockbusters personally.

I can’t imagine this is the right thread for this debate, but my view point is inequality and exclusion will never be solved by excluding in reverse. To say gay actors should be the only ones to play gay roles will solve nothing and get us nowhere. Equality works all ways and it’s achieved when it becomes utterly irrelevant who or what you are but rather if you are the best option for the task, role, cover or job. Let’s put our energies into that I say.

^For me, this topic seems very much so intertwined with who ends up on the front of magazines.

I see the issue more in terms of ‘what it takes’ for anyone to be a movie star. If an actor (male or female) wants to continually be given big roles, they have to transform themselves into a movie star - an image that broadly appeals to the public - which is an acting role in itself.

Gay? You have to pretend to be straight. Addiction problems? You have to pretend to be a health nut. Family issues? You have to continually pose for happy family shots.

In contrast, if you’re someone who derives most of their acting success from being on the stage, you have more freedom to express yourself, because that sort of audience won’t care. But if your living is made from having your face on the big screen - you won’t have the same liberty.

And it isn’t just an issue of sexuality - Oscars seem to get handed out whenever an able-bodied person plays a disabled person, or whenever a beauty plays an ugly woman. Nobody hires an ugly (ie normal) woman for the part, even though there are thousands of talented, normal-looking actors out there. After all, she’d never look right in the Louis Vuitton campaign or smiling out from the Vogue cover. She wouldn’t seem like a movie star.

So if the 'big fashion' cover was already shot when the CNN article went live, it must mean this is for an entirely different shoot? Grace mainly works for American, British and Italian Vogue. Lindbergh works for American and Italian, but not really for British (don't recall seeing his work in any of Edward's issues.) My guess is that it's between these three editions.
