i guess this is the right place to ask this - does anyone have any ideas on what i can do to make an old fur wearable?

i have my great-grandmother's mink which is really gorgeous but really old-lady. was thinking of bringing it in to be re-done in a more modern style, but honestly i can't see myself ever wearing a full-on fur coat or jacket, so matter how interesting...

does anyone have any ideas? i was thinking the fur could be the lining for a jacket... or it could line a big wrap with an interesting fabric that would be worn on the outside, like a woven wool suiting or something? or maybe i could have a big, crazy hat made? what do i do with this thing?

Unpick the main seams and lay out all the panels, so you can see exactly what you've got to work with. For me, this usually leads to the answer...somehow?

(On one occasion a scrap of fabric fell from the table onto something else and the effect was something I would never have even thought to try.)

At worst you will then know what you can't create from it. Or begin considering what things would lend themselves to achieving it anyway.:magic:

Swan Diamond Rose - that book looks interesting - was it a 'surprise' find? I would love to get a copy of it as I love to look at ways to reuse / customise.

since that Justice video "Dance" came out ive been having fantasies about tshirts hahaha

I'm not sure if this is the right tread...but just tie dyed some stuff:

i wish i had the talet to do it myself, but not yet, so im taking a few items tomorrow to a tailor to be re-done, a miumiu dress into a skirt, a chloe dress into a top, a halterdress into a strapless, ill post pics when they are done

fashion designers - i have a question

i fell in love with the print of a diane von furstenberg dress, but i'm not a fan of the shape of it. my question is, if i wanted to have a seamstress reconstruct it into a wrap dress what do you think would be best for me to do? purchase 2 dresses on ebay to make sure i have extra fabric? or just buy one in a larger size? there are a bunch on ebay right now in sizes ranging from 8-14 and i want to make it a wrap dress that would fit a size 4, so any opinions would be much appreciated. this is the dress i want to take apart LOL

thanks in advance!!!

I would think that he/she might cut it in the middle and transform it into a wrap but that's just my vague projection. Maybe a more experienced sewer might be able to get more insight. From what I believe I think you might only need one dress.

A good option would be to bring the picture to the seamstress and they can help you and let you know.

If you bought it to fit your actual size, then you'll probably want to get a larger size because you'll need some extra fabric to form the wrap portion of it.

Are you planning on just having the front changes to be a wrap, or are you talking having the entire dress taken apart to make the classic DVF wrap dress with sleeves? Also, are you planning on keeping the back neckline the same, or did you want to have a regular neckline in back.

Also keep in mind, with a project like this, having extra fabric to cut from is definitely a help. You never know what could happen in between cutting the old dress apart and finishing the new one.

I would get two just in case.....I love going to Philly....( to visit my best friend) to bad I live so far away I'd help you out......

thanks for the input. i think i want to take the whole thing apart and make a it look like a classic dvf wrap with sleeves. i think i might just buy the 2 largest sizes (size 14) and just use it as if i bought the fabric. like spike said, i should prob account for any mistakes and have extra fabric available

i believe 2 dresses would be a better option coz a wrap is bassically 1 and a half dresses. The front is 2 then the back is 1. A larger size might be tricky and remember if you try to improvise with a wrap dress the results may not be too pleasant

i like the dress as it is...:p
i wouldn't change anything...but that's just me...

i am really excited right now because i just fixed a pair of shoes that i really like but couldn't wear because the strap was too loose...
they have an elastic bit by the buckle of the slingback...
so i tightened the elastic and now they are perfect!...

yay!...

...
