Dana Marcolina

Love her polaroids! I wish she got more work... Also, I should say that I spoke to a girl that attended the same school as Dana, and she said that she is one of the sweetest.

She has traveled to China and spent time on a fashion runway. Her face can be seen in issues of Marie Claire and Seventeen magazines.
And she has yet to graduate high school.
Dana Marcolina, a 16-year-old Oreland resident, has been modeling for two years since she was discovered during a school play performance in 2004.
“It’s really weird opening a magazine and seeing myself,” she said, “but it is nice having something I can share with my friends.”
Dana was discovered by a scout from Elite Model Management, the prestigious agency founded in 1971. A recruiter for the modeling agency, Karen Lee, saw her perform in the school play and asked to meet with her afterwards.
“She came up to my mom and said I should model,” Dana said. “She was looking for new talent.”
Dana signed with the company in August 2004 and traveled to Las Vegas to learn more about the modeling industry. Karen Lee, who discovered her, is now her manager.

At age 16, Dana is already a bona-fide cover girl.
“We were learning about the fashion industry and how to handle being in the business,” she said. “It was a competition to get to know the industry.”
From there, she went to Shanghai, China, with about 80 other girls from 60 countries – including Japan, France and Italy – to participate in Elite Model Look 2004, where she won second place. While there, she participated in runway competitions and was able to gain actual experience in the business.
“I didn’t want to focus on winning there, but on learning,” Dana said. “It was a great way to start my career. It made me more confident as a person.”
After returning home, Dana started working as a model, walking the runways for Fashion Week and “Marc” by Marc Jacobs, and appearing in magazines. (Fashion Week is an event in New York City where designers unveil their new designs for the upcoming season. “Marc” by Marc Jacobs is a brand of clothes named for fashion designer Marc Jacobs.) Dana’s first published photo shoot was 12-pages of summer fashions in “Teen Vogue.”
“I have worked with lots of creative and hardworking people,” she said. “People have stereotypes about the business, but it is a big process, and the models are just one part. It is nice to feel like a part of something.”
Dana has always been interested in the fashion industry, but her sudden acceptance into the world of professional models came as a surprise to her. Still, she said she is enjoying the opportunity to grow creatively in an exciting industry. “This is a great way to experience new people and places,” she said.
Although she is not planning her future based on modeling, Dana is willing to take her career as far as she can go. Aside from her goals to be on more runways and travel to different countries, she would like to find a way to get more unknown models on magazine covers as opposed to the constant images of celebrities featured there. “I would love to be in Vogue and be part of the revival of the supermodel,” she said.
The Hill area teen has always been interested in the entertainment business and has aspirations to be an actress or singer. She does get experience acting in her photo shoots, but her next step is to try to get into commercials.
“It is a nice connection I have made,” she insisted. “I am in a creative environment, and I hope to be able to use acting skills.”
Dana, who is a junior at Upper Dublin High School near Ambler, is involved in the school’s theater program and is looking forward to furthering her acting in the future.
“I have made contact with a lot of different people,” she said. “Modeling has opened lots of doors.”
While she has begun her own career and is looking to expand her horizons, Dana uses several role models as inspiration, including Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum, whom she admires for their ability to be supermodels and have acting careers as well.
“They reached the level of supermodel and then turned their careers around,” she said. “They have brains and beauty, and it is inspiring to see that. I want to make my mark as a model and then do more.”

Local teen, Dana Marcolina, appears in a magazine ad for an Armani perfume, pretty heady stuff for a high school student.
Despite all of her success at such a young age, Dana makes it clear she is still a student and that her schooling is the most important part of her life.
“It’s been difficult at times, but I like to do my best wherever I am,” she said. “I have kept my A/B average, and I’m proud of that.”
Dana has had the full support in her career from her parents — Dan, 48, and Denise, 52 — and older brother, 19-year-old Dan, a student at Penn State University, who all traveled with her to the competition in China. In addition, because Oreland is such a small town, many of the residents know about her modeling and offer their support as well.
“The town is very homey,” she said. “It is very rewarding when someone asks me (about my career). It is a source of inspiration and makes it all worth the hard work.”
At this point, Dana is very happy with the direction of her career and is looking towards an obviously bright future.
“I wouldn’t change this for the world,” she declared. “I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
