Rugby. I still snowboard, I still throw myself off ski jumps and land in a tangle. I sailed all the time and skateboarded when I was a kid. I was a total tomboy, so I can’t shake that off”.
Despite being a tomboy, Daria has been modeling since the age of nine – “catalogues, work as an extra in advertising, films, TV mostly”. Then, at age 14, the cornflower-blue-eyed beauty won a modeling competition; the prize was a contract with the prestigious IMG Models in New York. After high school, Daria was ready to take up modeling full-time, hitting the catwalk the week that the two planes flew into the World Trade Center. But after that somewhat inauspicious start, she’s now working nonstop, starring in fashion campaigns for Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, Ridley Scott’s commercial for Prada, and runway appearances for you-name-it-they’ve-booked-her: Versace, Fendi, Burberry, Calvin Klein and luxury leatherwear company Belstaff.
“I sometimes feel like a 22-year-old trapped in a 40-year-old’s life,” she says, somewhat ruefully. “I’ve grown up so fast. My friends call me to say, ‘so-and-so is dating Bobby, and Ricky did this to Suzie, and I’m like, “I have to run, I’m off to my accountant’. But I figure that if I make the most of the opportunities I’m given now, I can have my wild and crazy years in my 30’s and 40’s.”
Initially, Daria looked upon modeling “as an easy way to make money and finance my art studies”. Now those studies are on hold. While she may not yet be on the same radar screen as Naomi, Linda and Cindy (who are all still working their cashmere socks off at 30-something-and-the-rest), model business insiders point out that Daria’s already a one-name brand, having ditched her surname, Werbowy. And at a time when the catwalks are dominated by exoic girls with cat’s eyes and panther-like grace, Daria has the requisite Slavic heritage.She was born in Poland to parents of Ukrainian origin, who moved to Canada when she was three.
“I had a very normal upbringing, which I think keeps my feet firmly on the ground. I go home to visit whenever I can, and stay up late making pierogi (Polish pasties), beet soup and cabbage rolls with my mum. They’re still my favorite foods”.
No starvation diet for this 180cm supermodel, then? “I think it’s important to have everything in moderation. I love, love, love chocolate – white chocolate, especially. These days, she’s cooking for two: herself and her cat with no name. “He’s an Abyssinian kitten, and I haven’t decided what to call him yet”. A boyfriend substitute, perhaps? “Well, it’s hard to have a relationship in this business. When people start recognizing you, it’s weird: you start to question why they want to know you. Basically, I’d like to reincarnate River Phoenix or Jeff Buckley. Please!”
Meanwhile, she’s enjoying every globetrotting minute of a stellar career. Paris and Milan (for the collections), Bora Bora (for a fashion shoot) and, her favorite destination so far, Marrakech. “I love the smells, the sounds – it’s like all your senses are heightened, and the energy is amazing. And the shopping is great. I bought 10 carpets, nice of which are in storage because I have no space for them in my apartment”.
But in refreshing contrast to her first-class, all-expenses-paid working life, she recently roughed it in Ireland for three weeks. “A gypsy road trip, with my best friend. We slept in a campervan, drove along the coast, swan in the ocean, didn’t shower. It was fabulous!” (She’s also been quoted as saying, “My hair looks better when it’s a little dirty”).
Ultimately, this action girl would like to sail around the world (until a couple of years ago, Daria taught sailing to problem children), but, she says, “Lancome would be a little upset if I took off now”. The art degree beckons, too (so she can study her heroes Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon). No, I definitely think you're right, in general. Obviously there are guys out there who'd love to get themselves some Daria, but out of biological instict the heterosexual male will obviously prefer the fleshier pin-uppy type to someone as androgynous as Daria.
Funny because I've heard those who find her boring call her just another typical beauty, but I've always thought her looks were anything but typical... Just goes to show ya, that whole eye of the beholder thing.

Speaking as how 'celebrity' is defined here in the US -- out of all the supermodels, Linda is certainly no longer a household name in the US (although this latest cover will likely jog some memories). She's not even a US citizen. Whereas Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington will always be popular here for the very reason that they ARE US citizens, Linda will not. Moreover, Linda hasn't even done a runway show here in years. So again, I believe Anna's choice for putting Daria on the cover would be for the same reasons she put Linda on this August cover. The latest Cavalli underwear ad. Welllllll...for what it is, it's fine. It's not my favorite Daria ad, but it's still darn good for a kitschy underwear ad and I would not be surprised if Cavalli underwear sales started going through the roof!

about daria being in a cover... who knows? i'm skeptical. why daria and not gisele? or an american model? and i have the feeling that should daria be on the cover, she'll be so airbushed, so polished, so hollywood-ised that i won't recognise her... i'd prefer her in some *alternative* arty cover, like i-d or numéro covers last year...
i feel in a (loser) counter-tendency today.

Why? Because Daria is the hottest, most exciting model to hit the fashion world since Gisele. One cannot gage Daria's overall popularity based on the number of hits here at her thread at tFS. It's mostly a young crowd here. But you can bet your bottom dollar or Euro that she is equally loved by the older fashion folks as well as the younger crowd, not to mention that she is beloved by fashion designers and magazine editors alike. Her popularity traverses both worlds, young and old. Unlike W and Teen Vogue (of course), Vogue caters to mostly an older crowd that speaks with its dollars. So YES, my money is on Daria.eword said:
