Daria Werbowy

I think Gisele is well known more because she dated Leonardo Di Caprio than for her modelling look. That's all I think about when I think of her.

When I think of Daria, I think of the Hypnose ad for some reason.

gosh, i didn't see these other replies too!

parapazzi photos? eerr... do you refer to those september 2004 pics with harnett or those may 2005 pics with the plastic bag in her hands?
how many parapazzi photos are there been in the latest... er... 20 months? ZERO!
Yes, but how many times has Liya Kebede and Natalia V. been photographed by the paps in the past 20 months? Angela Lindvall? Stella Tennant? Karen Elson? They are still considered iconic (by MDC), no?

Just because you choose to fade out of the spotlight for a bit doesn't make you any less iconic. Britney Spears hasn't had a new album since 2003. Yet she would still be considered a pop music icon because of what she accomplished from 1999 - 2003, even if she makes a new album now and flops. The magnitude of what she did before she decided to move out of the spotlight and settle down is enough to make her iconic, just as the magnitude of what Daria did should be enough to make her iconic.

Obviously, Britney/Daria are 2 very different cases. Britney was photographed numerous times and stayed in the spotlight because she was such a big star/trainwreck after 2003... and obviously Daria has not been able to retain the same popularity, but modeling is a much smaller profession than singing.

For a better comparision, I try to think of it like this: The Supermodels' fame is comparable to Beatlemania, Gisele's fame is comparable to Madonna, and Daria's fame is comparable to Britney. The Beatles were the TOP of music like the Supermodels were the top of fashion; Madonna was not as famous as the Beatles but still famous in her own right, like Gisele to the Supermodels; and even Britney's antics don't compare to Madonna's (sex book, the Like a Prayer video, er... I forget right now, but Madonna's basically been stirring controversy for the past 2 decades), but she is still very well-known, like Daria is known, even if she [Daria] doesn't compare to Gisele & co.

Of course, it's all a matter of opinion whether someone is iconic or not. Some would not consider Liya or Natalia to be icons, some would. However, it appears as though MDC considers Daria to be iconic, just like a number of posters in this thread. :)

caroliiine, eerr.... i think i got lost in your comparisons... :p ;)

^ rofl, I just wrote an exam so maybe I wasn't thinking clearly when I wrote that.

I'm just saying, even if Daria doesn't get as much attention anymore or as much attention as the supermodels/gisele once did, doesn't make her less iconic. There are people today in different professions who are no longer in the public spotlight as much as they used to be, yet are still considered iconic. There are also famous, iconic people today whose accomplishments don't even touch the accomplishments of the greats before them, but would still be considered iconic.

And then I compared Daria to Liya, who hasn't had any major campaigns for a while (I think? I haven't see her in anything lately), who skips runway seasons like Daria, and doesn't have paps take pics of her, yet is still considered iconic. Same with Natalia, though her campaign/runway absence is because of the CK contract.

Just a FYI for Liya for FW06: Ann Taylor, Gap, Givenchy, and of course ongoing for Estee Lauder...;)

But yes, I'm in total agreement with your definition of "iconic." #2 in the dictionary, not necessarily #3!

^ Is that her in the Gap ads? I thought one of them looked familiar! Still, that's not anything in high fashion, ala Daria's Versace/LV/Cavalli/Chanel campaigns.

During Liya's climactic career periods, though, she has had very similar campaign rosters. She has been around a bit longer, as you know (Hence Ann Taylor) ;) And Gap (As well as her former appearance at VS) showcases her impeccable ability to cross over even as an older model. It's definitely less surprising for her to be dubbed an icon, that's all.

(And Givenchy certainly counts as HF!)

Caroliiine, I agree with you, but Britney Spears is not a good comparaison. I think Gwen Stefani or Beyoncé are more credible than That poor Britney (who is better known for stupid scandals than her musical talent as Paris Hilton her new best friend...IMO of course). But I agree about the Beatles/Elvis were the first (as Naomi, Linda, Cindy, Christy, Claudia and Kate), Madonna (as Angela Lindvall, Gisele B., Carolyn Murphy Stella Tennant, Amber Valletta, Shalom Harlow and Karen Elson) and Daria is the new generations of Iconic models (with Natalia V.).

Don't forget who were on the first page on September Us Vogue (Special Models). Natalia, Gisèle and a certain Daria Werbowy.

But Anyway... everybody have different vision of what is an iconic models and it's ok like that;)

i'd like daria to be an icon, but you can consider her as an icon only if you have a wide conception of such a concept...
anyway, i don't want to spend much more time on this discussion, just two things:
1) just read what modelscom considers as a working icon, there's a precise defintion there and we'll have to see not only if daria is an icon, but also if she's working;
2) to me, as i said already, discussing if daria is an icon or not does not do justice to her. much more interesting is the fact that she has the potential to be an icon/a supermodel, but she seems to refuse to be that. this is the key to her personality, such a contradiciton, such a conflict, that makes her really interesting. and that puts her in a very interesting position in popular culture.

that said, that's all! bye!

your sister has always great taste... ;) never seen this pic before, thanks! :)
is daria between "los must have"?! ;)

anyway, which season is that taken from? fall 05? she seems so young...
btw, i wonder if there will be still some dumb person who after seeing this pic will continue to think that she had a nose job!

I think it's from 2005, but I really don't remember the season... I will ask my sis... maybe she'll remember it!

Here is other rare Daria pix

Scanned by me (From Flare, december 2002)

december 2002? that's interesting cos in her official chronology she was back to work only at the beginning of 2003...
maybe she was just making her first steps after her break (her first of a row... ;) ), maybe she was working for another agency than img...
funny how here she looks older...

p.s.: if it's 2005, it's for sure fall05 cos she skipped the following one. and she's too chubby for 2004.

Most.
Beautiful.
Woman.
Alive.

Sometimes, I think why the media popularizes stars like Lindsay Lohan, Eva longoria or Hilary Duff as images of 'beauty' when a face like Daria's is clearly more striking. I honestly believe that she is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen despite the fact that her features may not be perfectly catered to mainstream culture. (and yes, I do think Daria is much more striking and beautiful than Stam :p )
