Such a sexy guy, I have to say, and a brilliant photographer. This is one of his most famous of Marie Helvin in Tahiti, 1976.

David Bailey: Fashion is the most boring thing in the world
Iconic photographer David Bailey on his love-hate relationship with fashion and why he'd cry if he had to wear Victoria Beckham's shoes.

He's the creator of some of fashion's most enduring and iconic images; he discovered Jean Shrimpton and married Marie Helvin; he was even the inspiration for the film Blow-Up , so when David Bailey says he's not interested in fashion, it comes as something of a surprise.

Speaking to The Telegraph on the eve of his latest exhibition, East End , a deeply personal collection of photographs illustrating 50 years in the place of his birth, Bailey expressed in no uncertain terms where is photographic loyalties now lie - with real people, not the beautiful models he became so associated with at the height of the 'Swinging Sixties', the era he personified.

Whilst the fashion industry's love for Bailey shows no sign of wavering, his love for it seemingly failed to ever even blossom. "I was never that interested in fashion. It was the only way that a photographer in those days could earn a living creatively," he says of the early days of his career. It's an attitude which remains to this day, reinforced by his opinion of journalists: "I respect the ones who are in Afghanistan but I'm not sure I respect the ones sitting in the front row of a fashion show. It's the most boring thing in the world."

But despite this, he cites US Vogue 's Grace Coddington, Karl Lagerfeld and John Galliano as people he has "enormous respect" for, adding that Gianni Versace was "one of the most intelligent men I've spent time with."
Surprisingly, Victoria Beckham - the world's most famous clothes horse - also has a place in his fashion-hating heart, footwear permitting: "I think she looks very smart and she dresses a lot better than lots of people like that… I'm not mad about the shoes she wears. They look like they hurt a bit - if you were told you had to wear those for the rest of your life you'd burst out crying." The Duchess of Cambridge also gets a look in: "she looks great and she's the first one [Royal] that dresses with a bit of style, isn't she."

David Bailey: 'The 60s have never ended'

Whether it was John Lennon, Michael Caine or Andy Warhol, David Bailey's photographs of 1960s celebrities defined the decade. As a retrospective of his most famous images goes on show at Bonhams, he talks to Sarfraz Manzoor about Picasso, body language and his dread of photographing modern celebrities
