Designers for UNIQLO

I got the high-necked Alice Roi dress in black, which is so much nicer than I expected it to be! Very Dries-y.
I completely agree! I thought it was plain in the photos, but I fell in love with it today at Uniqlo. It is super chic. They were completely sold out of black, but the white is growing on me. I wish I could have gotten both. They also had the floral print in stock, but it looks really tacky to me. I love the high waist shorts and bought a pair in every color, but I think I must be crazy as I am pretty sure my grandma has a polyester pair just like them in her closet. I can't wait for Phillip Lim! The salesgirl told me it would be available at the Soho store on May 22nd.

Update on the Cloak/Uniqlo items...

May 2, 2007—When Alexandre Plokhov announced he was shuttering Cloak back in December, there was double cause for concern—not only was New York losing one of its more adventurous labels, but what was to become of the lower-price line the designer was set to do for Uniqlo? We're happy to report the latter went ahead according to plan, and turns out to have been well worth the wait. The capsule collection includes jeans, button-downs, and shorts, but our favorite items are Plokhov's cotton polos, which sport smartly truncated collars, button-down breast pockets, and epaulet-evoking detailing on the shoulders (apropos for a military man–turned-designer). While fans of Uniqlo's playful approach to color may be disappointed at the muted palette, the Russian-born designer says his blacks, grays, and whites pay homage to his adopted hometown. "I wanted it to be like a postcard from New York," he says, while also characterizing the line as "Cloak's cousin from Japan." The collaboration marks Plokhov's first foray into mass-produced fashion. (While Cloak had about five staffers, he notes Uniqlo has five "just to choose the buttons.") And happily it won't be his last experience with a deep-pocketed partner. Since March, he's been consulting on Versace menswear. "It's been surprisingly easy and invigorating and liberating at the same time," he says of the Spring 2008 collection, which is set to debut in Milan on June 23. Haven't gotten our seat assignments yet, but at least we know what we'll be wearing.

Philip Lim stuff hit the London stores about 2 weeks ago. I bought the jersey dress with the pockets. There wasn't much when I went (last weekend). I think they may have all sold out already? There was a small rack of Alice Roi blouses. Nothing else...

Are they getting in more stuff or is this quite limited?

I was after the Alice Roi but when I went there was nothing there.. :(

I went into Uniqlo yesterday and they had 2 new dresses out, both available in black and cream: a smocked jumper style and this one (photo taken from the uniqlo.jp online store). I thought it looked cute in the photos, but in person the shape is huge and very tent-like. It kinda reminds me of the Rodarte for Gap trapeze dress: I wish I could pull it off, but I don't want to look pregnant so I passed!

excerpt from todays wwd

"Uniqlo's fall collection, as well as its newest installment of designer collaborations featuring cashmere knit pieces by designers Lutz & Patmos, Adam Jones and Keita Maruyama, launched last week at the XChange.

"The strong response to Uniqlo's Designers Invitation Project for spring 2007, most recently Alice Roi's collection that hit stores on April 27, convinced the retailer to round up a new slew of designers to create fall collections. Lutz & Patmos, Jones and Maruyama each created cashmere knit pieces that are slated to hit Uniqlo's SoHo flagship in August.

Lutz & Patmos unveiled five styles for the fall collection consisting of argyle sweaters available in both short and long sleeves, a scoopneck sweater with a diamond jacquard print, and a V-neck striped cardigan, all retailing for $89.50, and a long V-neck cardigan, retailing for $129.50. Jones, British-born and Paris-based, designed a short-sleeved, V-neck dress and a cowlneck dress, both retailing for $159.50. Maruyama's bell-sleeved sweater dress also retails for $159.50."

It's roughly the equivalent of Gap in Japan but they have a slightly more "upmarket" image in the United States. They're aiming at getting some credibility by collaborating with established designers and it seems to be working, end result will probably be something that bridges the gap between well, Gap and H&M. The pieces I've seen are well made basic for a very low price, which can be quite attractive, especially for budget shoppers.

As for it being post-modern well it does mix high (designers) and low (a street label like Uniqlo) but the case could be made that design is a "low" form of art which would cancel even this claim. While I do enjoy waxing philosophical about art and design in general, I don't see it as quite justified here, considering the tone of the thread, unless you feel that some savage deconstructivism is in order. I don't understand the rest of your text, is this an attempt at ridiculing Japanese pop-culture for the generalized poor use of english?

i bet all the phillip lim items are sold out by now.

according to fashionista.com there was a huge line down the block of shoppers waiting to get in. the store was closed from 9-11 so fashion editors could buy what they wanted.

read the report and see images of the collection here

i agree with the blogger that lines are humiliating.

Well, I went at 12 and there was certainly no line--the store was pretty calm, even. I got everything I wanted, although I suspect some of it will go back. It's really a cute collection! The smalls and x-smalls were going fast...:ninja:

I was very underwhelmed by the Plohkov stuff though, which was selling out even faster than the P Lim.

I went in at 1:30 and the racks were completely full. I bought the black linen dress with the tie around the waist, and the grey tank dress. There was still a lot left when I got there, although I think the vests are gone, and there were only a few linen dresses left.

If you wanted any of the plaid or the tank dresses, there are still a bunch on the racks.

A store associate told me that they wouldn't be getting any new stocks in, so if you want something, get it now (or just pray that things get returned)

This is the first collaboration I have waited in line for (I adore Phillip Lim!) and it actually wasn't bad. I got there 15 minutes before the store opened (at 10AM) and there were about 25 people in front of me. They only let 10 people in every 10 minutes so there was no chaos, and the people working there were super nice and friendly, constantly restocking and helping people find sizes. They even had snacks and juice.

I bought quite a bit of stuff, but made the mistake of not trying everything on first. I found that everything except for the high waisted shorts ran large, especially the jersey tank dresses. I look forward to more Uniqlo collaborations...they seem to produce things that I actually wear, rather than the H&M or Target stuff, which just sits in my closet. And for the price point, I am very happy with the quality...IMO, the quality is better than other capsule collections, even those at a higher price, such as the Gap design editions.

What did you think of the shorts though? I might ask someone to get me a pair but I'm not sure....

^the shorts were the best thing in the collection, in my opinion. They seem very well designed. Just be sure you get the correct size--they are S.M.L.XL, which makes things a bit tricky.

I also liked the polo shirt with the stand-up collar....very simple, but a nice twist. :flower:

what sought of prices do they have? i hope it's affordable for a student/traveller's budget. i can't wait to check out the store this week!

i'm so bummed i missed the phillip lim stuff. i loved that black linen dress, but alas, i'm not in town :-(
