guerlain ?
need precise . . . !

Gair - la(n)

rhymes with "fair man"...the (n) is effectively silent, and the a is a bit nasal and quite short... Gair-la(n), not Gair-laaaaaaa(n)

Actually it's quite easy ... Lan .. you pronounce it just like its written and "Vin" like wine .. haven't you heard about coq-au-vin? :P

Thought you guys might like to hear how the Barney's SA I spoke with pronounces it ;)

Laaaaaan-Vaaaaaan. So simple! ;) :D

How do you pronounce Botkier?

Is it Bot-keer? Bot-key-ay?

I've only seen the name in print, never actually spoken.

Well, she's from Brooklyn, so it could be anything. For any surname of foreign origin, there are generally at least half a dozen common ways it's pronounced in the U.S. Your best bet is probably to call or e-mail and ask them directly. Contact info is on their page at www.botkier.com

spanish leathergoods designer loewe - what's the definitive pronunciation?

^I alway pronounce it chah-lie-un

Loewe= Low-eh-veh

^i think that's what i meant. but i made it be more drawn out. seems like i need to work on my phonetics! thanks scott!! :flower:

I always thought Loewe was pronounced in the English manner, but since it is a Spanish brand do they say Loh-eh-veh?

And is the EU in Demeulemeester (I think I spelled it right?) like the German EU as in Deutsch?

As for Cristobal Balenciaga, (as I speak Spanish), it's Chriz-to-bahl not -toe-.

As for Burberry, which do you prefer (Buhr-bury) or ghetto (Burr-BERRY)

This thread is great. I say Burberry Buhr-bury. I have sinned, because since now I have pronouned Givenchy pretty much how it's written. it doesn't matter much here though, none of my peers even know what haute couture is.

Yves Saint laurent... His first name is pronounced Eve, yes? I'm young, forgive me ;)

-G.

Lol, this thread is so much fun :D
Can't believe that all you americans have such troubles with european names..
Maybe you should try to actually listen to different languages being spoken by natives. Search the net for music, soundbooks ect.. or, if you can; travel.
Or take a class with a native teacher that can give you the right pronounciation and learn certain lettercombinations and get the feeling for the language in question..
If you have a basic foundation you'll be able to pronounce most names and words you see in written text.
Hum, hum. Yes.

hussein chalayan...is it Whu-sane Shah-lah-yahn? or shah-lay-yan? or neither?
"Hussein" like Saddam..."Chalayan" like Chah-lah-yahn. :flower:

How 'bout Boudicca? The "cc" is indicative of Italian, but I cant imagine it's pronounced "Boo-dee-cha." Or is it?

^ It's English, not Italian, so "ikka" is correct :flower:

No, it's somewhere in between "meh" and "muh"...more like "muhhh" (it's pretty hard to explain, sorry! )
