I've noticed a trend in shoes and boots that are distressed, worn or made to look that way. They are asking a lot of money for Golden Goose boots and these are really distressed looking, but I love them. crazy.

what is it about old vintage shoes that has so much appeal?

margiela and CCP and carpe diem etc have all been doing this sort of thing for ages now...

i have done it myself to a pair of frye boots....
some things just look better 'broken in'...
especially boots imo...

:P

I've see carpe diems and always liked them. I agree, boots look best.

maybe a good reason to let your dog play with your shoes?

^ Just make sure there's no ornamentation :P One of my dogs ate a suede camellia shoe ornament ... just one, and so I still have the other one, which is of course completely useless ... the most annoying thing is that she did it while I was in the room & not paying attention ... thank goodness they grow out of the puppy stage.

"Worn" to me means "loved". I don't particularly like any designer's effort to make something look old or used, torn or distressed - I'd rather do that myself over time!

something else, I know what you mean, I usually don't like most of the efforts to distress either, especially when its taken too far. torn, ripped and stained might be overdone.

I remember seeing some boots that were torn and ripped to shreads that were selling like hotcakes.

there is a certain pleasure taken in wearing them out yourself, but I do think some of these boots and shoes are done so well by the design teams that they are worth it.

Any of my shoes (or clothes) that are worn or distressed are down to me loving to wear them lots. The wear pattern is unique to me and my life.

Exactly! When I see boots or jeans or whatever else that are broken in, I always think they look very beautiful. But, the beauty comes from the experiences that have led to that state, not the factory worker who sand papered it for 4 hours. I adore the vintage look, but I feel it is somehow disingenuous when products are distressed artificially to only appear well loved. It just seems that any specialness is taken away by superficiality. I don't want to get too heavy handed, because I like the trend, but I just think it would be cooler if it was about something more. But of course the problem is that it is quite hard to find genuine vintage boots, and people who live in the city, or whatever other developed places, don't have as many opportunities to break in their own. :P
