Valentino's 'bag ladies' criticism

They've got money to burn on designer togs but Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts are nothing short of "bag ladies", according to fashion designer Valentino.

The Italian style guru has given the Hollywood pair a real dressing down in an interview.

"Today you see Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz running around looking unkempt in jogging trousers," he told German magazine Die Zeit.

"They look like bag ladies, like homeless people. In the past you never saw that."

Obviously Valentino isn't digging the whole Juicy Couture tracksuit trend.

The 73-year-old's full name is Valentino Garavani.

In 1967 he was awarded the fashion world's equivalent of an Oscar, the Neiman Marcus Prize, in Dallas.

In the 1970s he spent considerable time in New York, where he was embraced by personalities such as Andy Warhol.

He has since moved back to Rome and still designs. He also has his own perfume and make-up line.

[font=Geneva,Arial,sans-serif]One of the things I love most about working in fashion is the thought- provoking, positive and thoroughly modern views on the role of women in society that are regularly expressed by prominent figures in the industry. Valentino, the Italian fashion designer, this week spoke out about what can only be described as a global shame: the decline in sartorial standards among today's film stars.

As the multimillionaire yacht-loving designer put it, with consummate sensitivity, Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts "look like bag ladies, like homeless people". They have been photographed, he pointed out, "running around", "looking unkempt", and even "wearing jogging bottoms".

Sadly, these shocking allegations are grounded in truth. These days, celebrities - even young female ones - are allowed to roam the streets chaperoned only by their chihuahuas. The lifestyle of the modern off-duty celebrity (a brace apiece of Hiltons and Olsens, Spears, Aniston, Zellweger), largely involves steering a huge SUV around Los Angeles and getting parking tickets at the gym. The uniform for this activity is a Juicy Couture tracksuit, Havaiana flipflops, accessorised with a Starbucks takeout skinny latte, a vastly expensive handbag and ridiculous sunglasses.

Now, true, I can't say I have personally ever seen a homeless person in Juicy Couture, let alone with a lapdog and a Jeep, but let's not quibble. Clearly, standards are slipping, and the golden era we need to emulate, as Valentino says, is Rome in the 60s, when "women had less to do and looked after their appearance. They changed their outfits two or three times a day or had a complicated hairstyle". You see, Cammy, you need to drop this crazy notion that a 33-year-old woman can make her own mind up about what to wear. For a start, stop spending your leisure hours hanging out on beaches with gorgeous young pop stars, when you know full well that surfing makes your ponytail go all bumpy. Instead - for all our sakes - learn to do a chignon, swap the flipflops for kitten heels, and go pose by a stone fountain with your knees together.

I worship Valentino`s perfect style :flower: and totally agree that ALL women (not just celebrities) should always try to look as pretty & perfect as possible but nobody is safe from his criticism these days, huh?

He needs to stop the nagging before it makes HIM look bad...

lol ouch, the truth hurts...when hes right hes right...:D but they can dress however they like - although it would be fun to bring back old hollywood style, for ladies and gents.

i remember in an interview (during one of his couture shows) he even critisized erin o'connor (who was modelling in the show) for wearing jeans because he couldn't understand why she would do something like this.....but maybe it was just all the wonderful couture clothes around that made him complaining, who knows?

What Jess says is very accurate--homeless women do not wear Juicy. I've seen bright orange, I've seen puffers (all the pockets are handy), I've seen camouflage, but never Juicy. And I agree that no one has the right to tell celebrities what they can & cannot wear. Back in the "glory" days of Hollywood, everyone dressed more formally. Those were the days when women still wore hats, gloves, hose, skirts for all occasions; when people changed for dinner (and not into their PJs). The world has changed, and for the better overall. I can think of one young starlet who takes what she wears extremely seriously, and honestly I find it a bit sickening. Get a sense of humor, honey ...

I understand that with the attention celebrities are given and the fact that are looked up to other people, they could try and look their best. But no "star" today can ever replicate what someone like Marilyn Monroe embodied

^so true.

What crap is that? He obviously must be living in a fantasy world if he wants people to wear HC to do their supermarket runs. I mean,as liberty was saying about Erin....they have go from show to show in a matter of mere minutes alot of times, you can't expect them to be high-maintaince.

i agree with him- remember how true film stars use to dress? then again they were not under such scrutiny in their everyday lives. anyway i prefer the baglady look to the orange permanently constipated look that he is so fond of....

Why should woman look perfect all the time?
I really don't wish to bring back an old-fashioned way of dressing as it harks back to a different time when women's situation was very different.
So what if Cameron and Julia are too busy with their lives to where the outfits his couture clients do. I'm sure they have more fun.

yes- they have nothing else to do- so make an effort!!

Agreed.

And so much of the time, men are allowed to walk around looking like slobs, yet when a woman does it, god forbid.

Who flippin' gives a sh*t about how others dress? I sure don't, I have other things to worry about. Valentino can dress fabulously, and just worry about himself. Sheesh.

^Exactly.
I just think its time to look outside of Hollywood celebrities for fashion inspiration and everyone is doing that already.

Tracksuits with huge sunglassses and flip flops are kind of what I typically see everyday here in LA....the style here is too laidback [with some exceptions  ].

And his memory sucks, because I have seen PLENTY of pics of Marilyn and Audrey in casual clothes, not looking glam at all. No one can live up to his expectations. Also, the pics of MM casual, are my absolute favorites of her!

I think he is remembering a bygone era where movie stars had immaculate presentation 100% of the time. Well....he should also realise that that era has LONG GONE! Movie stars lead way more chaotic and hectic lives now, since the movie industry has gone into an overdrive. Why should they be expected to wear HC 100% of the time? Casual wear has also changed vastly from what it was before.....giving women the option to slouch around comfortably.....and they should be allowed that option!
