Donna Karan called her beautiful resort collection “The Pajama Life,” but she wasn’t talking about traditional loungewear. Instead she approached the idea with casual elegance and some pretty embellishment, capturing a vibe Karan described as “boudoir to black tie.” A series of dresses included a draped shirt version in pale gray silk and jersey with a hip medallion detail. It made for a softly slouchy yet still refined look.

Elsewhere, shimmery surfaces added to the rich feel. Case in point: a needle-punched metallic shearling coat layered over a gold shirt and chiffon skirt embroidered with sequins.

"From the boudoir to black tie," Donna Karan pronounced at her informal Resort presentation this morning. "There's no boardroom here." Some of Karan's washed silk jackets and cotton lounge pants would fly in a creative office—pajama dressing has been a big trend the last couple of years, after all—but for the most part the designer avoided the power shoulders that characterized the 30th anniversary collection she showed for Fall back in February. The aggressive styling of that show was replaced here with soft, diaphanous layers for both day and evening; noncolor colors like icy gray, nudes, and blush tones; and a mood that's best described at effortless.

Shoppers looking for structure won't find it at Donna Karan when these clothes arrive in stores in November. Instead, she's offering beaded double-layer tanks with jersey pants, a suede jean jacket over a sequined slipdress, an oversize V-neck knit topping pajama bottoms, and a wrap dress in jersey with a crystal closure at the hip. On the racks, pieces like that can appear droopy, but their fabrics rewarded closer looks and touching. And once the models slipped them on, they came languidly, sensually to life.
