The Value of Ingenuity

Designer Doo-Ri Chung re-imagined white shirts and shirtdresses for the Gap, but wisely saved her defining aesthetic for her core work. It'll cost you, but it's worth it.

In the collection she presented Friday evening, she whetted the audience's appetite with her signature draped jersey dresses in pale quartz hues. One dress with a corset-style bodice relaxed into ripples of jersey that flowed around the hips and swept open when the model walked to reveal a flash of her thigh. But Chung also pushed her aesthetic forward, using her skill with fabric to create gently tucked and pleated skirts in organza with a tulle overlay. The technique was dazzling and controlled. One more tuck, one more splash of Swarovski crystals and the balance would have been thrown off. Chung offered an example of what it means to be able to look at a garment -- a complicated garment -- and know precisely when to stop fiddling, ruching and bedazzling.

....Award winning designer, Doo.Ri Chung ended her show with several beautiful and graceful gowns (in satin organza or jersey, all with net overlays…her signature) that were also beautiful from any angle. In fact, the backs of her dresses, long or short (like those at Vera Wang and Gilles Mendel), were so arresting that in one case, Bill Cunningham (who never lets a good shot get away) quickly moved from his front row seat in one part of the room to another just to get the perfect angle. Of course, the gowns were just a small part of her beautiful 36 piece collection which was shown on the ground floor of the Milk Studios. Refined, inventive and elegantly modern, it perfectly illustrated her adeptness with draping, and innovative fabric combinations. Relying on a soft neutral color palette (pale lilac, bone, khaki, aubergine, blackberry, boysenberry, and black), she easily went from abbreviated and lean to long and languid as she played with length, proportion, and volume.

While Doo.Ri is apparently taken with a high waisted wide legged pant this season, she also showed high wasted shorts. Skirts also ran the gamut in terms of length and silhouette. Many tops had built in bra or corset details, and layering was used throughout. A bit of shine came in the form of Swarovski crystal embroidery and accessories. What would a Doo.Ri show be without a trench coat? Nothing of course (she showed a beautiful version in bone cotton which appeared to have layered sleeves, throwing it over a short strapless dress).

Was putty coloured fabric on special offer, this season, in NY? :innocent:If so, I hope the offer was valid in the US only!

Neutrals may seem like a safe choice for a designer (or 30), but the duller the 'colour', the more one's design talent (or lack of it) is apparent and the more interesting and well thought out one's designs better be...

I love some of the sandals (especially the high sided ones) and the brown satin is a particularly delicious shade of chocolate; but I think the designs themselves look completely uninspired.

I particularly dislike her wishy washy net overlays, especially when evident around the necklines and the fact that, even with the use of crystals, this collection still manages to look so bland.

It's a great shame, as there is so much one can, tastefully, do with crystals and satin (e.g. Chloe S/S '05) and neutrals (e.g. Bottega Veneta S/S '07) without one's collection turning into a borefest; but one does need a little imagination and a dash of courage, it's true.

BTW, I'm sorry if I sound harsh - most of this isn't just about Doo.Ri, it is really about all the uninspiring collections we've been 'treated' to this NY fashion week.

boring, but quite a few lovely pieces. The problem is, you have to look for them.. when I'd like to see them pop up out me.

Honestly, im disappointed at her use of crystals.. with all the resources she's had.. :(
