Emma Watson joins Twitter laughing protest

Actor Emma Watson shows solidarity with Turkish women posting pictures of themselves laughing in defiance of Turkish politician

Proving that laughter is infectious – and the best antidote – British actor Emma Watson showed Twitter solidarity with thousands of women who have posted mirthful pictures of themselves in defiance of a call by a Turkish politician for women to stop laughing in public.

Watson, of Harry Potter fame, tweeted a photograph of herself doubled up in stitches and linking to the Guardian report of the Twitter backlash against Turkish deputy prime minister Bülent Arinç, who said in a speech to mark Eid al-Fitr on Monday that women should be "chaste", know the difference between public and private, and "she should not laugh in public".

Thousands of women have since posted pictures of themselves laughing out loud with the hashtags #direnkahkaha in protest and to highlight women's rights in Turkey.

Watson, a goodwill ambassador for UN women, has 13.8m Twitter followers. Within 30 minutes, the picture of her laughing outside a pavement restaurant had been retweeted 2,400 times and favourited 4,500 times.

I love that she tweeted the laughing picture for the protest. Yet another reason for me to not only ADORE her, but also to respect her.

I love all her last outfits, especially the Valentino mid-drift look. Love it!

Emma Watson on Her Personal Style

Name: Emma Watson

Occupation: Actress

Residence: London and New York

Favorite item of clothing: Jackets. Whether it’s a classic trench, a BLK DNM leather jacket, a great oversize J Brand denim jacket or a beautiful Miu Miu opera coat, I love that they always look and feel better the more you wear them.

Favorite place to shop: I love shops with a unique point of view. In London, I buy my lingerie from Tallulah. I do my vintage shopping in Notting Hill. English Topshop is hard to beat. In Paris, I will always go to Isabel Marant. In New York, there is a great shop called Otte, and another called Bird. In California, there is this great boutique called Anaïse where I stock up on beautiful handcrafted hair accessories. Net-a-Porter or Shopbop are great for online.

Favorite shoes: Paul Andrew made me the most beautiful shoes for my graduation. I won’t wear shoes I can't walk in and his were so comfortable. Recently, I’ve been falling for Ancient Greek. But day to day, my trusty Alexander Wang Kori ankle boots or Tabitha Simmons suede Early booties get me through most daytime occasions. For nighttime, I almost always wear my Prada pointed-toe suede pumps. I've had my pair five years now, and they are still perfect and go with everything.

Favorite accessory: My go-to daily little jewels. Every day I wear a tiny, drop diamond necklace on a sweet gold chain from Catbird, a very special Jennifer Meyer gold bar necklace that was a birthday present, and my tiny rings from Hirotaka, Boucheron, and one vintage one from my mother.

Scent: Diptyque’s Feu de Bois candle.

Watch: Cartier Tank Solo in gold.

Style icons: Lauren Bacall, Sofia Coppola, Cate Blanchett, Françoise Hardy.

Regarding the last set of photos, its from an event in Uruguay:

On visit to Uruguay, UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson urges women’s political participation

Says mobilization to ensure more women in leadership and decision-making roles is essential

(Montevideo) On her first country visit as UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador, acclaimed British actor Emma Watson today highlighted the need for women’s political participation and leadership at all levels. Ms. Watson’s visit to Uruguay comes at an opportune moment as the country gears up for national elections, and where a one-time quota law guaranteeing 30 per cent women’s political representation will be applied for the first time.

At a meeting hosted by the organization Cotidiano Mujer, a grantee of UN Women’s Fund for Gender Equality, together with partner organizations CIRE (Ciudadanías en Red) y CNS Mujeres, Ms. Watson met with women’s advocates from around the country, and listened to their strategies for increasing women’s voice and agency across all political platforms.

“Women’s rights are personal to me, especially on political participation and leadership. I am delighted to be here today as a Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women and learn about the work on the ground, hear from the people at the frontlines, and to understand what is working and what is not. I am here to support and to amplify these voices and share this work with a global audience,” said Ms. Watson.

“Emma is a strong voice for young people worldwide. Her commitment to the issues that we work on at UN Women multiplies our ability to reach and engage more young people — who are key to advancing gender equality. This visit calls attention to the importance of women’s full and equal participation in the decisions that affect their lives,” said UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

Globally, women’s political participation remains low, with only one in five parliamentarians being a woman. In Uruguay, in spite of efforts, women’s representation in Parliament stands at 13.1 per cent, placing the country at 103rd position in the world ranking of women in Parliament by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and UN Women, below the world average (21.8 per cent).

To bring a historic change, women’s groups are galvanizing support by leveraging the quota law, and by strengthening alliances between the women's social movement and political parties, across the country’s 19 departments.

“Women must have a say in matters that affect their countries, communities and families. After all, they are half of the population, so women’s equal participation in decision-making is a question of justice and democracy,” said Ms. Watson. “I have learned that it is also a question of priorities, as women are more likely to focus on issues such as education, health, unpaid care economy and the environment. These are important issues that affect all of us.”

During her stay, Ms. Watson will meet with top ministers and government officials and participate in a youth dialogue with young women politicians and activists. She will also be part of an event with parliamentarians, where women’s rights activists will submit signatures calling for an extension of the national quota law and gender parity in the electoral lists of political parties. The event is the culmination of a high-profile “Do your bit for the quota” campaign, which was launched in July.

Robert Downey Jr., Emma Watson, Mike Leigh to Receive Britannia Awards

BAFTA Los Angeles honors will also go to Mark Ruffalo and Dame Judi Dench

Actors Robert Downey Jr., Emma Watson, Mark Ruffalo and Dame Judi Dench and director Mike Leigh will be the recipients of this year's Britannia Awards, the British Academy of Television Arts Los Angeles (BAFTA Los Angeles) announced on Thursday.

The awards will be handed out at a ceremony hosted by comic and actor Rob Brydon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Oct. 30. The show will be broadcast on BBC America on Nov. 2.

Robert Downey Jr., who currently stars in “The Judge” after a lucrative run in the “Iron Man” and “Avengers” movies, will receive the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film. Last year's recipient was George Clooney, with the award going to Jeff Bridges, Tom Cruise, Daniel Day Lewis, Robert De Niro and Steven Spielberg in prior years.

Emma Watson will receive the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year, after a year in which the “Harry Potter” actress’ most notable role was alongside Russell Crowe in Darren Aronofsky's “Noah.” At 24 she is the youngest person to receive the award, which in the past has gone to Daniel Craig, Kate Winslet, Tilda Swinton and Helena Bonham Carter, among others.

Mark Ruffalo, who co-stars with Channing Tatum and Steve Carell in Bennett Miller's “Foxcatcher,” will receive the Britannia Humanitarian Award not for his acting, but for his work with the non-profit Water Defense organization, which attempts to keep water sources free from industrial contamination.

On the eve of the U.S. release of his acclaimed film “Mr. Turner,” which won Timothy Spall the best-actor award at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Mike Leigh will receive the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing. Past recipients include Kathryn Bigelow, Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan.

Dame Judi Dench, who won a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer in 1965 and in 2014 appeared in “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and “Tulip Fever,” will receive the Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for Worldwide Contributions to Entertainment, a honor reserved for, in BAFTA's words, “iconic and trail-blazing individuals.” Ben Kingsley, John Lasseter and Kirk Douglas are among the past winners.

The Britannia Awards were established in 1989 and have gone to more than 60 individuals and organizations since then, with slightly more than half of the recipients being British.

Aww.... I'm happy to see that Emma's begun her work with the UN, looking forward to seeing what else she does with such a position. And that's very exciting to see she's getting an award from BAFTA, can't wait to see what she wears.

Kind of amazed she is getting an award. I don't dislike her current work, but I would never have thought she would qualify as artist of the year... Has she been up to something I missed?
