Thanks for the link czilla! I have actually never heard the term "hapa" before! I wonder which genes (mom or dad) have the stronger influence on whether a person will turn out looking more asian or caucasian (or maybe it's just random?). My mom is Chinese and my dad's English and I think I look more white than Chinese. I have the lighter hair/eyes, but still the rounder, more Asian facial features (a bit like the baby-face models). People can usually guess I'm part Asian but when I go to China, I stand out (a lot ) and am constantly mistaken as a tourist!
^^ hapa is hawaiian but the word has migrated so much that UCLA --> east to my uni have clubs that operate under the moniker.
I think it's less that one parent delivers a stronger genetic punch than some traits are just more dominant. Blonde is almost always going to cede to super dominant brunette. Most of us end up just looking downright mixed, as opposed to more one thing than the other.. hence the need for these terms like eurasian, hapa, halfies, hotness on legs. teehee.
but cheers to cherub faces and sticking out like a sore thumb in Asia. yep. i get gawked at from hk to bangkok. oh well. hey, you might just have a career as a soap star or VJ over there though. ;p
Yeah, it's more dependant on individual genes than on an influence from the more "Asian" genes or "Caucasian" genes. My friend that I mentioned before, doesn't look very Asian at all, but her brother looks a lot more Asian than she does.
LOL to sticking out like a sore thumb in Asia! I haven't been back for a while, but I find it amusing that it's always Asians that ask me whether I'm mixed, whereas the Caucasians from the bay area never usually thought so. The only time I started getting comments from Caucasians was when I moved away to college. Haha.
I kind of wish I'd inherited my dad's higher-bridged, super straight nose, though. lol.
Adore - Haha! YES! That's what I meant. Maybe without the red-eye she'd look even closer.
Haha, yeah. Asians can always spot us from a mile away -- they can even play the "hmm, s/he's definitely abc/fob" from a football field or two away. ;p Ah, i <3 inter-race quirks. I'm just playing though -- nothing but <3 for the asians fashionistas around here!
As for caucasians being able to tell, hm. Yeah, it's always a bit strange when my new teammates feel the need to comment on my looks. "But you look SO WHITE!! ::giggles with glee::" I mean, is that supposed to be affirming? People will see what they've been schooled to see -- Asians are more likely to see the asian features, nice caucasian girls from Oregon less so!
adorevintage -- great pic! I'm a big Devon fan too. When paris hilton's sidekick was hacked, devon aoki's # was among the ones posted.. I couldn't help calling it.. Her voicemail msg was just so cute and small sounding. ^^
Yay for hapas! I'm always curious to see what other hapas look like.. just to see if they look like me haha. I've noticed we all look the same as kids but then look TOTALLY different as adults. This website names/shows a few half-asian models/celebs:
gosh there are some beautiful girls here! im half vietnamese but got ripped off i think, my mum n my sister have this lovely olive skin while i get stuck lookin pasty! *sigh* its just not fair
