Expensive Skin Care

the SKII mask are the best thing to used .. REALLY .. what it does is it puts back mositure back into your face .. creating this glow and then it brightens up your face . now they have also come outta with a whitenting range mask that has a higher level of whitening source inside them. but i want to WARN you they are VERY VERY expensive .. n it comes in packets .. they are not your squeeze outta cream - they are your put on mask then you throw them away after a certain time .. so if you have the cash - do it almost every other day then you will see a differences .. really .. i have frens who needs to look their best for their wedding days and they do it for 2 weeks leading to the day of the wedding and yeh they look great ... flawless skin ...

Is La Mer just MIRACULOUS in general, or does its effects differ according to the individual's skin?

How does everyone here find whats best for them? There seems to be so much out there with great reviews I have no idea whats right for me. Espesiclaly since I'm looking more for prevention than treatement, I dont expect to see much difference.

I think it depends on the persons skin no matter what you use. Thats why there isn't one BEST creme or brand, it depends on the persons skin, their problems, enviorment, etc.

hey ya'll, most everyone here is young and has great skin! how about hearing from ladies in their 30s who have good skin and what they use.

I use la priarie (cant spell, so sorry) the pink cream wash and its the only think i can use but i find that moisturisers dont have to be expensive. If you want a good one go for Kheils Ultra or a cheaper one thats just as good oil of Olay beauty fluid.

my mum is 50 and only looks like she's in her 40s
she uses la prairie radiance eye cream and the luxe cream (moisturiser) and she looks amazing!
her skin has really changed dramatically over the last months since she switched from chanel to LP ,the skin around her eyes is a whole lot firmer (she used to look tired all the time) and her skin looks more plump and radiant

thanks for the tip! I turn 40 on TUESDAY. dum-dum-dum... aaaaaaah!

it might be a bit too heavy for summer season though
she also received samples from the smart cream+eye cream and she liked those too! they're not as rich as the other moisturisers

ladies and gentlemen.
i am a lover of skincare, i have bought and tried pretty much every major brand under the sun. AND i, used to (and sometimes still like to) believe that if it costs more, it's better.

BUT now my skin care expenditure is not so big. why? because i visited a doctor instead of the department store.

doctors can prescribe creams and medications with much more effective active ingredients to help with almost any skin concern. Some of these ingredients are present in department store products (and even in supermarket products too) but they are limited in their effectivenes simply because stronger concentrations of such active ingredients are not allowable.

a cream from a doctor, which might cost $40 (well i don't know the prices, since i have health insurance, but i'm guessing most of you do too) will have a far higher concentration of active products and will be far more effective than any product u buy in the supermarket and department store - even if the product does cost $2000 for 30mls.

would u rather trust a doctor who has studied at a university for years and years or a company interested ultimately in $$, being represented by someone who has read some manual and goes once a year to some training course?

If you are concerned with wrinkles, age spots, dullness, break outs... go see your doctor instead.
think of it this way: the money u save on those products goes into lots of wonderful clothes, a great hairstyle or even part of a holiday.

The luxury skincare companies love telling stories:
e.g. Creme de la Mer - max hubner the scientist/physicist who creates this miracle broth to heal his scarred face.
e.g. SK II - the monk who notices the youthful hands of sake brewers

or catch-prases and key words such as:
"BIO-something a rather", "CELLULAR-something a rather", "some sort of random-COMPLEX"... "miracle broth.." (<-- hehe that last one makes me laugh)

they use ingredients such as "GOLD" (this is an irritant people), "marine derived acids/enzymes" (a slightly mroe expensive method of producing and a fancy way of saying "Hydroxy-acid" - although granted due to the properties of polar molecules, certain biologically derived products with only one type of the molecule will be 50% more effective than a racemic product created in a lab)

And SK-II is the "precious" product created from yeast. If anyone has ever worked with yeast before (regardless, bread yeast, brewing yeast) you will see that it is incredibly active, CHEAP and very easy to look after. Yeast creates an incredibly high level of the B group vitamins (which are great for the skin and is one of the main reasons why "pitera" - another invented word for "vitamin B rich yeast water" - works)... but it would be cheaper and far more effective to ingest vitamin B instead.

AND my final rant, is that whatever u smear onto your face can only penetrate into the top layers of the skin. If you want to effect any dramatic change, then no topical skincare will be able to do that.
read the fine print, read the ingredient listing. don't read the marketing "this is a precious miracle in a bottle" mumbo jumbo

think about it...

Great post^

I said something similar to BigB3n recently as we talkd about skincare.

I'm currently using all retail brands, but want to move into something new.

I'm thinking of going to visit a dermatologist and an esthecian (people with training and education on skin) to see what is best for my skin.

Many times with the cosmetic companies (and I know this because I've worked for many of them) are really only interested in sales. They use every ploy, marketing tool to reel you in.

So a sales associate for say Chanel is going to tell you what's best for your skin from THEIR line, and very rarely would recommend something that is not sold in that store. The have sales goals and commisions to meet.

NOW -- on the other hand. Does that mean all department store brands are crap. NO, some of them are still great products. And I LOVE alot of them.

It's just for me, I think I want to go with something a bit more clinical at the moment.

anyway..........great post!! Karma to you:flower:

^^ Agreed, great post! I don't really believe that skincare will perform miracles; some are better and some are worse...

I use Chanel skincare mostly, and that's because I love the look/feeling my skin gets; I suspect that expensive skincare often simply has more advanced film forming properties and more "cosmetic" ingredients than cheaper brands, but that's usually it...

But I have to say that I know and have seen people who look great and swear by certain creams and claim they do work and have transformed their appearance... Maybe you just need to find out what works for YOU, because we're all different and react differently to products... :flower:

There is some stuff that I loved from Chanel. When I worked with them, and was getting it for free it was great. But having to pay that much now for it. I just can't do it, no matter how well it worked.

Lucikly I've found stuff that works great for my skin and is a bit more affordable.

I totally agree Tott -- if it works for you, that's what best, who care's about the name or the price.

Everyone's skin is different and will react differently. You have to use what works best for you.

agreed, no amount of miracle cream can heal obviously flawed skin, start from the inside, eat healthy, see a derma for high strength treatments and then use the products to maintain the new raw skin!

I just realized today, that one of my friends back home in Orlando (where I'm moving back to in three weeks) is an Esethecian.

I was chatting with her and she was like

"Oh don't worry, I'll hook you up with microdermabrasion, glycolics, products etc when you get down here"

So I can get free facials and treatments any time.:woot:

I read a book recently...I think it was called "A guide to healthy skin" and it stated that no product would ever help the skin, and that it is best to wash with regular soap and water and not use moisturiser as there wasn't a single product out on the market that was beneficial for the skin. I was a bit confused by this because

a) i've always been told never to use soap on the face
b) I do notice a difference between cheap skin products and expensive ones (e.g. I love biotherm moisturiser which is $40 a go as opposed to neutrogena at $6 a go)

I know that you have to eat healthily to get the basics of good skin but i've always believed that more expensive products could help the skin...so i'm not really sure what to think now.

it is simply marketing and the world...everything and everyone has a different school of thought. There are tons of health reports out there in the world and all seem to be backed by strong sources but yet offer contradicing information, at the end of the day, its what works for you, if it works, why bother what the world says?

i have used La Mer for the past five years and initially thought it was great.. however I've recently switched over to the much cheaper "Patricia Wexler" line and I couldn't be happier!! The glycolic acid peel is AWESOME and so is her daily SPF 30 moisturizer. I'm also using "acnostat" at night. I've always had intermittent adult acne with hyperpigmentation - my skin now, however, has never looked better. Maybe it's the new skin care?
