Am I turning into a snob?
I've been reading this board for a few months now; and
I can't help it, but all of a sudden, I'm starting to look down on people wearing non-designer name brands... particularly HANDBAGS.

Even women with guess, baby phat, non-brands: I used to be like, "cute purse!" and now I see it as, "that purse was a knock off of .......; that's not classy; or she got that at Ross/Macy's/Marshalls/etc." :o :o :o :o :o

I don't mind DIY purses, which is what I wore before I discovered TFS; but I wouldn't even be caught dead in those anymore! What's happening?!?! I like to think that I'm trying to be a more refined shopper; but not a anything near a fashionista (...yet). ;)

 I know what you mean... It's alright to recognize such things, but there's no reason to look down upon others because of it.

snobbery... or just finally seeing where everything is derived from? one of my favorite things to do is look at bags at like Sears and be like.... that shape is LV, that handle straight off the YSL runway, those buckles are SO MJ! my friends hate it, but i think its kinda cool.

fashion education is fun.

exactly, i think some justified snobbish attitude is ok because there are some people who just earn it but it's kind of silly to look down on people who evidently dont have the same access to certain knowledge..or the same opportunities..whatever.

YES, I love that! But my mom hates it when I make comparisons. She's like, "How could you possibly know they ripped it off of Prada? You don't know that. You're just a fashion victim. Bla, bla, bla..."

I do the same thing. I used to have no clue, but now I tend to judge... not a thing I'm proud of. I tend to judge on superficial things alot, although I try my best not to.

We should form a support group for overcoming fashion judgement... 12 step program... :innocent:

When I first signed up here, I was afraid everyone would be very stuck up and snotty and look down on me because I cannot afford expensive clothing and do not wear the latest fashions, but I have found that this is a very friendly place. I also learned that quite a few people respected me for having a strong personal style and for being a craftswoman who makes the vast majority of her own clothes.

That said, I've caught myself silently snitting to myself over very bad craftsmanship among my fellow independent dressmakers. Sometimes I just can't believe the kinds of crap some people want to try to sell. I get nasty and judgemental and think things like, "Jeez, dude, get yer butt back to Home Ec 101?" or "When did you get kicked out of 4H?" Very mean. I try not to judge or be harsh, because everyone has to start someplace and a lot of my very early work really, really sucked, but then I think, "okay, this person is delusional enough to think that their crummy work is going to sell...that someone will pay for something with uneven hemlines and unfinished seams?"

It can be kind of hard to know how and when to draw the line when it comes to stuff like this. I am never nasty to anyone about their work, but at the same time, I do lose respect for people who consistently show poor quality items. I guess the same might apply to a high-fashion afficianado who recoils in horror from a Juicy tracksuit.

Rip offs - if you can't afford a LV purse so what, buy a great purse you can afford, rip offs are a great show that your lame, no way can i afford prada but im not killing my bank account to get one and im not sacrificing my "style" for a cheap knock off...

I didnt know wannabes could be snobs ;)

I think there is a difference between analyzing someones style and being a snob about it, like if someones a snob they will point out that there stuff is more expansive and always flaunt there labels. I usually try to play down my clothes when people ask becasue are so label driven these days.

I love this thread...

This is what I think about thinking bad things about fakes.. It's kind of ripping off the integrity of anothers design.. And fake LVs? Lame, why do you need to galavant around some fancy label, let alone pretend you can?

I think the fact you recognize this may be a problem is the first step to recovery  ... Best of luck in becoming more humble :flower: ....

i completely agree with you, but i sometimes do like uneven hemlines and unfinished seams :p :innocent:

one thing that really, really irks me is when designers don't even bother to do a simple thing such as matching up the print on a dress. take this dolce & gabbana dress into consideration:

don't you think that the LEAST they could do is match up that floral print?!? ESPECIALLY when you're paying WELL over a thousand dollars (this dress cost about $2500 i believe) for something like this?!!??! especially from such an ESTABLISHED and recognised designer label?!?!

the dress itself is gorgeous but the fact that the print isn't matched up makes it look terrible. and since the flowers themselves are so big the unmatchedness is so completely obvious.

that makes me so angry!! :furious:

^^ Oh absolutely. I mean, if I can do that on a budget, somebody who's pretty much swimming in it should be able to sacrifice the fabric to match the prints.

I pretty much won't wear mass-market plaids and stripes because I MUST have them match along the seams, otherwise I feel like a doofus. When I made my plaid glazed-ultrasuede coatdress, it literally took me as long to cut the darn thing out as it did to actually put it together!

I have the same thing I guess....when I see a bag or shoe or whatever I can't help but thinking "That's so Gucci-runway" etc etc. And it is fun to do mostly. But what I also caught myself doing is looking down on people with bad taste, or on trendhopping people. I wasn't bothered by that before, but since tFS, I am.... it's funny when I read it myself :p

I hope you're right.. because in that case, I'm not a snob!!!

I couldn't agree more!!! You're paying a rather large sum of money for something that does not even look like it should be worth what you've paid for it! Nothing bothers me more than when patterns do not match!!
