Strangely, I've always had a soft spot for September 2002 - the very unloved Jamie Bochert, a girl no-one thinks is good-looking, standing in an undignified pose in what looks like a scrapyard, yet i-D thinks she’s worthy of a cover.
To me, it represents the moment when someone perceived as ugly stands up with confidence and says, “I get to have the same things the beautiful people get, by doing things my own way.” And gets to have a September cover too. (Source i-dmagazine.co.uk)
As an aside, I seem to remember the Aaliyah cover came out at the same time she died, so suddenly, a magazine on the newsstand with a living celebrity on the cover turned into a document of the dead.
