American Cities

I was reading the "London or New York?" thread and someone brought up LA vs. NY... and that inspired me to create this thread!

So...what American cities do the people of tFs prefer? I love NYC, but I have always wanted to go to Las Vegas, just to see what all the fanfaire is about. :flower:

No, you don't. I went to Vegas last summer.

I'd like to live in Boston or any American cities that are old and European-like.

I love NYC, never been to L.A. or the West Coast. I want to go to San Francisco and the Bay Area. I hear it's beautiful. I also like D.C. I visited my aunt there a few years ago and I liked the pace.

^ Aww thanks. I find DC's pace to be a little sluggish.

So far, I love New York but I love Boston's charm.

Of all the places I've been, I really like Georgia so far.

Everyone there is so nice.

NYC and San Fran. I am thinking to move to San Fran if I can't move to Europe. I've been to LA, Boston (many times), Chicago, Philly - don't like any of them for various reasons.

New York will always be my home and it is by far my favorite American city, but I have started to feel this hankering to be in LA the last year or so. I think I may need to do an extended visit there this summer. I feel like if you are from either LA or NYC you should have some experience on the other coast, its just such a different environment. I do not really like Boston much, but its cute. Fun for a few days, but its too slow and stodgy for me in general (despite its rapid New Yorkification as of late). I have heard great things about Chicago, but I was only there once as a young child and do not remember much of it.

edit---Just read Fausts post and he reminded me of Philly. Which is my absolute LEAST favorite American city. I have friends who live there, and I do not know how they stand it. whats with the accent?

new york...
san francisco...
tucson, arizona...
marfa, texas...

... i find southwest america both inhumanly desolate and electrifying...

I loved san francisco when I was there. I really enjoyed the berkeley area too. San Francisco has just enough change in the seasons to where it's not extreme (like it is here in ohio) and I can still have a winter and summer wardrobe. I don't want to live anywhere where I can't both both wardrobes.

I actually thought Las Vegas was beautiful and fun! And I was only 18, so I couldn't even gamble! Every single hotel is so beautiful. You feel like you're in a movie.... palm trees, sun, statues, Lambourghinis everywhere.... what's not to like?

Oh, and all you can eat are really cheap buffets... hahahah... all you can eat for very little money!

OH! And the scariest roller coaster I have EVER been on is there - at New York, New York!

If you go, I think the Bellagio is everyone's favourite.... so gorgeous

i love new york, it's where i'm from, will always be home, no place like it, etc etc etc.

but now i live in philly, and i think it's pretty great too. annoying accent aside (they think my NY accent is annoying down here ), i love living here because of the great old neighborhoods with tons of gorgeous stone homes, the fact that center city is smallish and easily navigable by car, is packed with great boutiques, restaurants, etc. there are tons of great little bars, lots of cultural stuff going on, etc. just a really nice place to live. plus, it's only an hour from manhattan by amtrak.

not a fan of LA. i can't take it.

my favorite city has got to be my hometown, NYC. i've been to boston, which is lovely, but just does not compare; it's a less in-your-face and more conservative (more clean too) version of NY. i've been to honolulu recently, which feels like another world. it's very tropical and crowded with tourists. i've been wanting to go to san francisco for a while now, i have a feeling that i'm going to love it there. i'd also love to visit providence.

Chicago definitely has its own feel. I did not grow up here, but am definitely partial to it. It has the charm of the Midwest, but the feel of a big city. And the lake in the summer is fabulous.

I really dig L.A. and the surrounding areas. Santa Monica is great... The West Coast in general is very lovely.

Miami has an electrifying feel to it. The nightlife is unbelievable. South Beach is so cozy and casual, and I love all of the outdoor eating arrangements... and I think the fashion down there is underrated..

It's so hard to pick one city! I absolutely cannot...

L.A. is not my scene. Too hot, too polluted, too crowded, too natural- disaster-prone, too crime-infested, ltoo acking in culture, etc. I like some aspects of it (healthy lifestyle, good food variety, etc.), but overall it does very little for me.

San Francisco is nice. Clean and pleasant.

Las Vegas is hot like a b*tch. Completely seedy and barren, despite its flashy exterior.

Boston is expensive as hell, but still charming, interesting and rich with history.

Washington D.C. is nice, but dull.

New York City is extremely bustling, crowded, and manic...and I love everything about it. Great restaurants, exciting culture, interesting people, lucrative job prospects, etc.

Orlando is fun and sunny (don't remember much b/c I was merely a kid when I visited).

^^I can definatly see why one would find Washington, D.C. a bit boring. I was born there, and I have been there a few times. It is a great place to get all of the city life, without all of the interesting quirks about it. Some places in DC, however, are supposedly quite crime-ridden.

Has anyone here been to Memphis or Nashville? I have always wanted to go there. Are either of them any good?

^ I've only driven through Nashville, and it seems so charming. I really liked Chattanooga (sp), as well. Tennessee as a whole. And I saw a program on Memphis last week, and it just seems so charming... low-key, in a way.

Gosh, there's a whole lot to see between the East and West Coasts. Try Austin Texas, Atlanta GA. Sadly I would have suggested New Orleans:(

Los Angeles
Las Vegas
and small towns on the South-Western coast... Oceanside, San Bernardino, Oxnord...

It's pretty common to think that New York is the cool place while California is rather for pensioners... Well, I don't know, there may be something wrong with me, but I didn't get New York... Oh, well, maybe I'm just way too conservative...
