this may not help, but i think they were trying to recreate images from french 19th century artists like jean-leon gerome, who featured eastern princesses with dark, sub-saharan servents. so rafaeli being middle eastern orks into the concept. he was painting pics of hot middle eastern girls and made loots doing so.

I find it ironic because according to the Bible, the Israelites were enslaved by the Egyptians, no? So you have an Israeli girl being serviced by "African" girls (the gold and fans are very Egyptian). israel is in the middle east. ther are fair persians with blond hari--but that doesn't rule out the area of their birth, raising, life.

and i htink the painting is evoking subsahgaran slaves. probably west africa. if i were to show other pictures, it would be more evident the women he used were middle eastern--pitch black har, dark eyes and distinctive features. i am not sure if it is histoically accurate but gerome made lots of money painting pics of naked 'orientals' and such that european lusted over but never met.

I wasn't referring to all Middle Easterns, I'm referring to the fact that she is an Israeli Jew being serviced by "Africans" and drawing the parallel between that and Jewish enslavement in Egypt. Intentional or not, I find the reference ironic and out of left field.
