Well... In some ways we are very much alike, in some other ways not, but I think we're certainly more alike than different.

There are still cultural differences between different parts of Europe, or between US/Europe.

Anyway, the article is a joke, I agree with you all. One of the stereotypes I don't understand is that Parisians are rude. I've had friends tell me this too. Practically everyone I met was very nice!

I believe the reason people were nice to me, although I speak practically no French what-so-ever, was that I remembered to be polite. To say "Bonjour, madame/monsieur. Parlez-vouz anglais?" and not just starting to chat away. I mean, if you are rude to Parisians, why should they be polite to you? [/b]
hey tott-my take on why everyone thinks parisians are rude...it's a very busy metropolis and moves at a very fast pace...all major cities are stressful places to live...i think this stress can come accross as rude...but they act that way towards each other just as much as they do towards foreigners...it's just life in the big city and some people aren't used to it...
it's very much the same here in ny...

i love paris [/quote]

I, too, don't understand the stereotype that Parisians are rude. They are polite in that when they go into a store or restaurant, they say hello. They say please and thank you. They do not however, use false smiles and compliments which I think tends to throw some people/non-Parisians off. I have a very advanced English student from Paris who has told me about her coworkers here in SF who are so phony, yet she laughs it off because what else can she do. She thinks it is not being direct and to the point which is where the phoniness steps in. I really admire how direct she is and am working on being extremely direct myself. I love it.

that model is constantly used in la redoute's catalogues, funnily enough... i guess she really personifies that cool parisien look.

How often have you asked yourself what the style secrets are behindthe effortless chic of French women? From elegant fragrances, amazingclothes, classic chic styles, lean silhouettes (even with the cheese, wine and chocolate), perceived natural beauty, you can’t help but askyourself how they do it! Believe it or not - it’s easy when you knowhow. And, yes, I daresay we all have an “Inner French Woman” who isdying to spring to the surface, like a flower’s blossom gently unfolds.

In America, as women, we’ve become “victim” to a self-punishing,depriving and self-sabotaging nature. A lot of times, we’ve given upon ourselves to fully serve others and putting our needs aside. We’reinspired by fear and self-loathing. So, in order to fill the void, thestyle of American women tends to revolve around the “more is more, newis best” idea. Our approach to fashion, food and fitness subscribes tothis dictum, which is the absolute opposite of French style.

Here are the secrets of French women you can use to help you stand out from the crowd:

1. French women intimately know their body and which styles lookgood on them. They do not beat themselves up for perceived flaws, butknow how to creatively put emphasis on their assets. French women havemore personality when it comes to their style - they own their look. So, it’s key to establish a unique look that works for you.

2. French women buy a handful of good quality, neutral-coloredstaples that they can mix and match with each other for maximum wear. They do not “collect” clothing. Clothing is an investment and is meantfor a return on their investment. They also know when to purge an item.

3. French women know the power of accessories. They cherish four tofive high-end fashion accessories (costume jewelry and scarves) thatthey wear all the time. They might add one or two new trendy pieceseach season and wear them out. They also invest in high qualityeveryday leather handbags and shoes, keeping their return on investmentin mind.

4. French women become friends with a great hair stylist who isskilled at working with their hair type. They get a fuss-freehairstyle and maintain it with great conditioners.

5. French women treat their skin as the treasure it is. Get afacial every month or just give yourself a weekly facial. Maintain, protect and nourish your skin daily. If you have great skin, youradiate and barely need any make-up.

6. French women use make-up as an aid to emphasize their beautifulfeatures, not hide them under layers and layers of coating. Theprinciple applied is: less is more. Your basics include: tintedmoisturizer with SPF, a light powder, blush, a great mascara and alipstick or lip gloss.

7. French women know only too well that you are what you eat, whichis why they follow a diet that is rich in seasonal produce, red meatand oily fish - all of which help to keep a figure trim and hair, nailsand skin in tip-top condition. To further boost their skin’s radiance,French women will also drink plenty of water and, for generalwell-being, eat a little of what they fancy - including chocolate and aglass of red wine. They relish in the pleasure of small indulgencesand do not beat themselves up, like American women. Everything inmoderation and smaller portions.

8. French women believe in getting their exercise throughout theday, by walking and biking. The important message here is to notbecome obsessed about your fitness activities, but pursue them withpleasure. If you hate the stair climber or even going to the gym, findsomething that gives you enjoyment and not dread. And again, don’tbeat yourself up if you’re not keeping up with all your colleagueslatest fitness center stories. It’s time to be unique and do what isfun for you! Follow the French on a balanced and time-tested approachto life.

Keeping the above secrets in mind, you are now ready to let out yourinner French woman and stand out from the crowd. Unlock the world ofsensory delights to discover yourself and assert your femininity!

I think the secret is the fit. You know, in stores you can have clothes tailored / altered to fit your body better. Yep, even in high-street stores like Naf Naf or Etam!!

I love the so called "french style", but apart from celebrities in there I never see it personified in France's streets. I see more non-french people trying and with success looking how the french were suppose to look.

^ Really? I see French people dressed very French all the time when I'm in France.

Well It's just my opinion, I lived there for a while, my impression of french or better said Parisian day to day style is exactly like the candids that we see in the topic of Paris street style, not very inspiring . I like the idea of french style like we see in eds movies, french celebs, but I could not find it at all in real life. I see way better reproductions of that style here in London, that's where i'm living at the moment.

When I go there I always see a few inspiring-ly stylish and impeccably dressed women but most people are just as poorly dressed as Americans lol.

I think it also depends on which area of Paris you hang out.. Classic, refined, chic almost mythical French elegance is rarely seen outside some very specifics places in Paris... Say avenue Montaigne, Faubourg saint-Honoré, Passy.

Then it also depends on what you expect style-wise.

French, or in this case Parisians as most people actually talk about Paris, are not as daring as Londoners.

What I like when I'm in London for example is that people don't care what you're wearing whereas in Paris, you get so much stares and comments when you wear something a little out of the ordinary, excentric.

French street-style is certainly more conservative, more subtle, it's all about details, cuts, colors, accessories, fabrics and maybe it's because I'm older or I'm getting more chauvinistic  but I like it and aspire to it more each days.

When i think of french women i think of a girl wearing a blue and black striped shirt, and the shirt has this slightly loose boat neck and the sleeves goes a little longer than the elbows. She's wearing black pants, skinny pants but they're not jeans and they're slightly rolled up at the end. Her hair is blonde and shorter than to the shoulders, it's soft and shiny. The blonde colour is more white than yellow but it's still sophisticated. The hair is covered with a red beret, the ones that doesn't have holes in them. The typical french one. She's wearing those shoes you typically see your grandmother in, but she makes them work. They're loafers, beautiful loafers. Her bag is a black, simple bag and in the bag there's cigarettes. Two packs of gitanes and a pack of Marlboro reds.

oh that kind of grew into a story, i just got carried away. hehe

Those kind of loafers.
