If you love her as much as we do, you'll be aware that Gemma Ward is the model of the moment. She's progressed from Next Big Thing to become the model du jour on interational circuit. At only 17 years of age, Ward has already achieved amazing success.
It's certainly a long way from suburban Perth to the Big Apple but that's where her ethereal beauty has taken her. Two years ago Ward was attending school in Shenton Park in Western Australia's capital and living with her parents, older sister Sophie (who's also a model) and her younger twin brothers, Oscar and Henry. Today she is based in New York, jet-setting across the globe, starring in campaigns for the worlds biggest design houses, opening and closing countless catwalk shows and featuring on the covers of some of the most influential magazines in the world.
Her beauty has been described as "other-wordly" and "porcelain doll-like". Her wide-set eyes, alabaster skin and Bambi-like limbs set her apart from the overtly sexy models of the 90's and have put her in a league all of her own. Despite all the fuss that has been made over her, Wards remains like any other 17 yr old girl.....well, almost. She still loves hanging out with her girlfriends, Aussie expat models such as Nicole Trunfio, Amy Finlayson and Jessica Gomes as well as Canadian model Daria Werbowy. She still listens incessantly to her metallic pink ipod, and loves to lose herself in a good book, although now these are an essential part of getting through long days of castings and shows that involve an awful lot of waiting around.
Unlike most teenagers, though, she has her very own apartment in New York's West Village. She is in the process of decorating her new space, which she says is "quite tricky- it takes a very long time but I'm willing for it to be that way, because I want it to be just right for me".
She loves to community atmosphere of her new home and the amazing place all within a few minutes' walk from her front door.
Ward was never that into fashion when she was growing up, but being launched into a lifestyle that revolves around clothes, accessories and make-up tends to change all that. She is now regularly snapped in outfits that any fashionista would be proud to own.
Having walked the runways for so many designers in Paris, Milan and New York, Ward nominates Marni as a perennial favourite and Chloé as her current obsession, which is highly convenient as she had the honour of opening and closing the Chloé show at the autumn/winter '05 shows in Paris. But don't go thinking that this is a coup Ward takes lightly. She is one girl who really does know how lucky she is " To open and close the [Chloé] show is a big deal for me, because I know how much it means to alot of people."
The ready-to-wear shows are the hightlight of the fashion calendar, and Ward lists Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton as the most fun, with fabulous clothes and an incredible atmosphere.
In the last two years she has walked the runway for more that 50 designers, opening and closing many of these shows. In 2004 alone she graced the covers of Vogue Australia, US Vogue, Vogue UK, Vogue Japan, Paris Vogue and US magazine "W", and she has also featured in print advertisements for design houses such as Yves Saint Laurent, Prada, Balenciaga and Jil Sander, earning her some serious pocket money. The latest notch on her belt is featuring as the face of Hermés, one of the worlds most exclusive fashion houses.
All the excitement and pressure of doing shows takes its toll on just about everyone involved, including Ward, who says she feels thoroughly exhausted by the end of the each season. "Sometimes, no matter what you do, the stress accumulates until you can only get rid of it one way- a good cry" she says.
While Ward may be leading a pack of what has on occaison been coined the "new supers", she remains as down to earth as ever. " I do pinch myself sometimes when I'm home i Australia, chilling with my usual buddies. It's easy to start thinking it's normal when you're surrounded by girls in the same situation, because a lot of my good friends [in New York] are models".
Modelling is not all Ward plans to do. "I'm defintely going to finish my studies when I have time to do it to my full ability". As for what happens after that? Perhaps we'll see Ward on the silver screen, as acting is something she is very interested in. That, of course, is after she has travelled to Africa and India with The Hunger Project "which is an amzing cause for stopping world hunger".
Her advice for aspiring models is simple: Ward believes that in her industry everyone has an individual path to follow. IT takes time and perseverance, and success definitely does not come overnight. Throughout her relitively short career she has always remembered one thing " Never forget to keep laughing at yourself". For somebody who is so successful at such a young age, her words of wisdom are inspiring.
