IT's a long way from Perth's suburbs to the Big Apple. For teenage supermodel Gemma Ward, the journey has been as much financial as it's been geographical.
Manhattan-based Ward has vaulted into the world's top 10 earning models, raking in $3.4 million a year according to US magazine
Forbes.
"She'd easily be Australia's biggest international success in modelling today," her Sydney agent and Viviens Model Management general manager Catherine McGill said.
McGill said it was Ward's versatile looks and hard-working attitude that have put her at the top of the modelling world.
When she first hit the big time at 16, being chosen by luxury label Prada to open its Milan fashion show, she was known for her "doll like" girlie looks.
In her career she has been the face of Calvin Klein Obsession Night perfume and modelled for fashion labels Valentino, Dior and jewellery house Swarovski.
At 19, her curves have now put her in a whole new category.
"What she's proved is that there is a versatility to her look and in the last little while she has definitely become more womanly," McGill said.
Ward joins the ranks of some of the world's sexiest women in the
Forbes list.
Brazilian supermodel Giselle Bundchen was No. 1 with earnings of $37.7 million.
British model Kate Moss was a distant second at just over $10 million.
Ward has diversified into acting, recently filming her first feature in Australia, the yet to be released
Black Balloon.
She has also recently started to spend some big dollars in real estate, paying close to $2 million for a New York apartment.
