Gemma Ward

Beauty Gemma Ward lights up seamy side of life

AFTER weeks of preparation Gemma Ward the supermodel has finally become Gemma Ward the stage star.

The early verdict is that the cover girl is as mesmerising treading the boards as she is on the catwalk.

Ward made her stage debut in preview performances of the Perth Theatre Company's The Ugly One on Friday night and again last night. While reviewers will wait until after Tuesday night's official opening before delivering their verdicts, we can let on that she is as striking as ever.

And she vamps it up as a sexually voracious 73-year-old.

Ward's pulling power was evident at the first preview on Friday, with a near-full house at the State Theatre Centre's Studio Underground.

PTC general manager Nic Clark said ticket sales were "going gangbusters".
"We're close to reaching our box office target even before we open," he said. "I don't think the company has done this before in its history."

He said curiosity about the new State Theatre Centre had spurred people to buy tickets.

PTC artistic director Melissa Cantwell has put a bold stamp on the first season in the company's new home at Studio Underground with the casting of Ward alongside seasoned actors Benj D'Addario and Geoff Kelso.

The play, by Marius Von Mayenburg, deals with society's obsession with physical beauty and the extremes people go to achieve it.

It's great to see she's doing something that she loves, and making fashion magazine appearances to boot :flower:
Looks like she's happy which is the main thing... will be exciting to see what happens in the future.

I wouldn't call TV guides 'fashion magazines', but okay...

^It was just an enlarged version of one of the ones taken for the tv guide wasn't it? I wouldn't say she's appearing in fashion magazines again.

There was never any doubt that all eyes would turn to the lovely one on the opening night of The Ugly One.

WA supermodel- turned-actress Gemma Ward was scheduled to make her much-hyped stage debut at the State Theatre Centre last night in the play about society's obsession with superficial beauty.

Ward, 23, still has some way to go to develop her stagecraft to a level that commands the same presence as she did on the catwalk.

But she makes a fair fist of her first outing.

The New York-based Ward, who appears opposite Johnny Depp in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides plays several different supporting characters in The Ugly One, a 70-minute absurdist satire by German playwright Marius von Mayenburg.

These include a sex-hungry septuagenarian and the young wife of Benj D'Addario's title character, an inventor called Lette who gets the perfect facelift after his boss deems him too hideous to market his new invention.

Directed by Melissa Cantwell, The Ugly One also features Geoff Kelso and Brendan Ewing alongside D'Addario and Ward on a minimalist and clinical set of a raised platform surrounded by four chairs from which the actors arise to perform their parts.

The Ugly One is the Perth Theatre Company's first play in the new centre's 200-seat Studio Underground. It runs until April 9.

Gemma Ward can model, but can she act?
PERTH supermodel turned actress Gemma Ward made her highly anticipated stage debut last night in Marius von Mayenburg's, The Ugly One.

Directed by Perth Theatre Company’s artistic director Melissa Cantwell, the fast-paced absurdist satire explores our contemporary obsession with physical beauty.

Casting the stunning 23-year-old as the wife of Lette, an unspeakably ugly man was a brilliant idea in theory.

Her star power has brought the PTC a tonne of publicity and boosted ticket sales, but last night the question on everyone’s lips was, can she act?

In a nutshell, yes, she can. But she’s still learning and it’s a big leap from the catwalk to the stage.

Ward has several film credits to her name- including the soon to be released Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in which she stars opposite Johnny Depp - but on stage there are no second takes.

Swinging between three characters including Fanny, a 73-year-old woman with a fetish for plastic surgery and the young wife of Lette, Ward only stumbled over her lines once but at times, particularly at the beginning, she looked somewhat wooden.

However she made a good go of it and as the play hit its straps she warmed and seemed to settle into her roles.

Her co-stars WAAPA graduate Benj D’Addario, Brendan Ewing and stage veteran Geoff Kelso out shone her but that was to be expected – the trio have years of experience under their belts.

Having said that the PTC’s first production of 2011 is a fiercely intriguing and at times witty and disturbing play which asks the audience to consider, is there such a thing as too beautiful?

As the play opens we meet Lette played by D’Addario, he is not a pretty face and when his boss overlooks him for a big presentation his wife confirms he is hideously ugly.

Shocked, he decides to go under the knife. He is transformed into an aesthetic masterpiece and an overnight corporate success, but with his new looks come a new set of problems. Women lust after him and he discovers beauty isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Kelso anchored the play giving a solid performance. His presence on stage was reassuring and much needed.

Ewing’s heightened interpretations of Lette’s colleague Karlmann and the awkward gay son of Fanny were at times over done, but none the less he added laugh-out-loud moments.

Likewise D’Addario was solid playing both the ugliest and most beautiful man in the world, no mean feat.

No doubt given time Ward will come into her own as an actress. Despite her inexperience she is mesmerising to watch. It’s a surreal experience seeing the towering former international supermodel perform just metres in front of you and an experience Perth audiences wont forget in a hurry.

And someone's comment...
Wooden (like Elle MacPherson or Cindy Crawford) she is not. Saw the preview of the play and was very impressed. There is a lot of depth to this young lady. -EJ
