Gemma Ward

I really wish I lived in Australia so I could have seen The Ugly One, sounds very interesting.

She was obviously in The Black Balloon, which is an Aussie film. It's clear that Gemma's very patriotic. I wouldn't mind if she walked in their Fashion Week, I'm itching to see what she's like on the runway now sans ugly Prada hair and make up.

Oh btw, she had some sort of interview today? Check her tagged Instagram pics and people met her at some sort of event sponsored by Coke Life. She's wearing a pretty white dress (might be Alexander McQueen and she's looking better than ever) I would post them but the wifi isn't working on my phone!

What a major downgrade if yes.

how is that a downgrade? Gemma made her comeback by opening friggin Prada! Now she wants to work from her home country obviously because she is a mother to a young daughter AND she's supporting Australian talent. She's not downgrading, she's staying true to herself which makes her even more admirable to me.

I'm glad she's doing these things. It's obvious she's enjoying her life now, she wants to do all the modeling stuff from a safe place because of her child, which is really great. She's doing well :flower:

She just sounds so intelligent. Very well spoken and polite. That's more attractive than physical beauty.

Gemma will be in the Ellery show tomorrow night! She finally gets to open MBFWA!

Sydney designer Kym Ellery brings Gemma Ward back to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Austr

SHE is a supermodel with the beautiful curves of a breastfeeding mum — and tonight Gemma Ward will be the first model to stride down the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

Designer Kym Ellery is bringing the 27-year-old model back to the Sydney catwalk after almost a decade away, after Ward abandoned modelling in grief following the death of her ex-boyfriend Heath Ledger.

“I’m excited to be back on the runway and it is bringing back memories,” Ward, mother of one-year-old Naia, said. “It makes me feel really proud to model for Kym.”

Ellery said she had chosen “a combination of women walking in the show with various shapes and sizes” for Fashion Week, which last year was rocked with controversy over ultra-thin models.

“For us it’s about choosing girls who embody the brand and wear it with attitude. Gemma is the perfect choice; she is incredible, established and (has) achieved so much.”

The French government passed a law this month to stop the use of super-skinny models, with the threat of jail for designers who book them.

This is the first sign local designers are taking steps to follow in the same direction.

Ellery, the 2015 Fashion Week ambassador who also shows in Paris, says she prefers healthy women.

“I think the French government is trying to protect the girls who might get anorexia and it’s up to professionals to manage it,” she said. “That is why we work with the best casting director in Paris.”

This year, the 20th anniversary of MBFWA, will be Ellery’s last show in Australia.

From September she will show permanently on the official Paris schedule, plus open a new office and atelier in LA.

The plan is to be based in each city for part of the year so she can expand into leisure wear, couture and candles.

“My aspiration is to live between the three cities and have a brand that can diversify,” she said. “Australia is an important market but it’s important for me to ... make Ellery an internationally recognised brand.”

Ward said she found the designer’s range perfect for her figure: “Being so tall it’s hard to find the right fit but her silhouettes are perfect.”

Tonight Ward, who returned to the runway for Prada in Milan last year, will open the show in a ’70s-*inspired look.

She said her active lifestyle kept her in shape. “I’m always running, swimming and kick-boxing to prepare, but because I’ve been so many different sizes I’ve stopped trying to fit into clothes from the beginning of my career.”

Gemma Ward is back on the catwalk and loving motherhood after a six-year hiatus

AFTER a six-year hiatus, supermodel Gemma Ward is back on the catwalk.

Tonight the glam 27-year-old will open Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia at the Ellery show.

She was one of the world’s biggest models with her trademark doe eyes when, aged just 20, she gave up modelling shortly after the death of her close friend Heath Ledger.

At the time, Ward was the most in-demand model on the scene, commanding $25,000 a show with 24 Vogue covers across the globe, but she suddenly retreated from the industry after falling into a deep depression.

“If you feel trapped, you don’t realise you can do something about it. I went through depression. I had to slow down, take a step back and look at my life,” she says.

Leaving the fashion industry at the height of her career was a risky move and while she appreciated the success she’d had, she says she just needed to be alone.

“I chose to do that and the consequences were on me. I was willing to do it because I wanted a break. I didn’t think it was going to be so long.

“Since then I’ve lost other people in my life and it’s a tragedy but it’s a part of life,” she says.

After Ledger’s death in January of 2008, Ward says she opened up to her parents about how tough things were and they encouraged her to explore new horizons and seek professional help.

“They had great advice and encouraged me to talk to different people and to know that it is not shameful. That was a huge thing as well.”

Ward says it’s vital people suffering from depression find professional help. “I think it is incredibly important to talk about it and to seek help and understand it is not forever.”

She says although it’s hard to believe when going through it, you will survive.

“It changes — life changes and you can be in a completely different place weeks or months later. You will get there eventually and even if it’s a struggle for a while, you have to have faith,” she explains.

Part of the catharsis included travelling with her model partner David Letts to Nepal, India, Asia and Europe. She also discovered theatre and film and was cast in several roles including Black Balloon, The Ugly One, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides alongside Johnny Depp and The Great Gatsby.

“It was a personal moment in my life where I needed to stop and explore things that I knew I wanted to do with my life. I was exploring acting roles, music, writing and theatre work,” Ward says.

But it was the birth of her daughter Naia a year ago that really helped Ward focus and she says this new energy led her back to work.

Last September she made her comeback in Milan, opening the Prada show. Since then she has signed with Country Road for its 40th anniversary and become the ambassador for Coca-Cola Life.

“It has been fun to show Naia new places as we travel around for work. It is amazing because you don’t know how much having a baby is going to change you but it gave me focus and direction. I know what is right and she is a priority — it played a part in coming back to work,” she says.

Perth-born Ward is now based in Sydney and between jobs says she channels her inner hippie, digging daily in her vegetable patch. She proudly says her pumpkin seeds have sprouted so she is now busy making vegetable soups from scratch.

“I’m really enjoying Sydney right now. I have a vegetable patch and make almond milk and miso soups. I have also been growing a lot of kale — it was growing like mad but apparently you shouldn’t boast about that because it’s really easy to grow,” she said.

Her relationship with Letts is also a priority. When not doting over their daughter, the pair organise date nights, which is usually a simple trip to the beach with takeaway pasta.

Like most working mums she works around the clock juggling commitments, and was even a few minutes late to our interview because she was expressing her daughter’s night feed.

“We live in a very creative space. I grew up in a family where we could express emotions and share and collaborate and it’s the same now. When friends come over we usually get instruments out,” she says.

Ward’s latest personal project is her website, Gemmas.com, which will be launched later this month. The site will sell her favourite Australian and international brands.

This website project sounds cool. Hopefully it launches soon. Also I just watched the video from The Morning Show and she looks so good. The styling on her was just lovely, soft waves in her hair like that and the shade of blue on her dress complimented so well.

Hearing her talk openly about her depression is quite sad but also shows that anyone who you might think is perfect can be quite the opposite. Does anyone have pics from her Aussie fashion week?

Oh I thought it was earlier, never mind! V excited to see her do her thing on the runway.

She opened for Ellery...
