Freshly minted international supermodel Gemma Ward, 17, of Perth, provides a rare backstage look into the glamorous world of being a runway model in Europe in the Christmas issue of Vogue Australia. Ward is guest editor of the Christmas issue, yet another publishing coup for the magazine's editor, Kirstie Clements, who is impressed by Ward's maturity and insight. Vogue has had Ward keep a diary during the recent European shows. One entry from a night in Milan shows it's not all that pretty backstage of a major show.
"I turn up to Versace and have to refit my dress again, they are changing around looks, and still haven't seemed to figure out the running order. By the time I am done, backstage is awash with panic. I put my head in my hands and take a moment while they glue in the 500 mandatory hair extensions.
"When the entire contents of my make-up artist's bag seems to have been dumped on my face, I get into my first look and try desperately to hear the new directions over the excess of Italian screaming. Since the running order has been changed I have no idea who I'm doing the group walk with anymore but before I can ask the show is under way. Girls are clambering over each other to get into their second looks and all I can see are hands flying in all directions, one putting more blush on me, one tugging from behind, one pulling my dress down, one pulling my leg up and shoving a shoe on my foot. Milan is killing me."

(NEW YORK) Proving that Kate Moss shouldn’t be the only supermodel to get an issue of Vogue, Gemma Ward just wrapped her own issue of the Condé Nast title. Calvin Klein’s latest “obsession” edits the December issue of Vogue Australia—fitting, since she hails from the land down under. In the issue, Ward recounts, in detail, her experiences from the recent New York, Milan, and Paris shows for a fashion runway diary that was documented by photographer Malon Stolzman. “When models do diaries of their fashion week experiences, you never know if they are real,” said Maja Edmonston, Ward’s manager at IMG Models. “She really documented every day of fashion week, every night she went out, every fitting. She went through the process to really give an idea of yes, that it can be glamorous but exactly how much they work those six weeks.” [IMG Models, like The Daily, are both part of IMG]

In addition, Ward selected a portfolio of never-before-seen images of herself from backstage, at parties, and at fittings that will be published in the issue. Meanwhile, the cover, which was shot by Patrick Demarchelier (who also captured a feature story inside on Ward) on a rooftop in New York, features an exclusive interview with Marc Jacobs, which she conducted immediately following his spring ’06 show. And though she’s quickly become a superstar in her own right, there’s no sibling rivalry between Gemma and her older sister, Sophie, who is also given a feature story.
