i hardly post here, but for the gemma fans: i met her today. i know, i can't believe it myself. but she was in the east village on the same block as my apartment, and i had a very brief but pleasant conversation with her. she's lovely and stunning in person - somewhat shy, and very polite, and displayed a bit of effervescence when i mentioned her australian vogue issue from last december (surprised and very flattered). i can post more details regarding our conversation later if you'd all like...
That's so lovely nuyste :flower: Please feel free to share more details about the conversation if you like, Gemma sounds wonderful  :flower:

Hello again all - here’s a more detailed account of today’s encounter with Gemma…enjoy.

So like I mentioned before, I live in the east village. I’ve seen a few models before, they live on my block and around the St. marks area in general. I was walking to class today around 2 pm (I attend NYU), and I was walking towards 2nd avenue, and at the end of my block, I see this tall girl giving a cheek-to cheek kiss with a male and female friend as they parted ways. The closer I walk towards the end of the block I realize it’s Gemma.

At this point I’m in total disbelief – as I’ve mentioned before, I’ve seen models in my area and in Soho before, but Gemma is my absolute favorite. So I end up reaching her on the block (we’re both waiting for the light to cross 2nd Ave), and when the light turns green, she takes a few steps ahead of me. About half way across the street from behind her, I decide to talk to her. Again, I’ve never approached any celebrity or model before, but I figured she’d be very pleasant, so while we’re crossing the street, I say: “excuse me, are you gemma ward??” and she lessens her pace to see who’s addressing her. When she sees me, in a very hesitant way (I think she was surprised I actually noticed and knew who she was, she starts to smile awkwardly), she goes: “yes, I am…” and then I tell her how I’m a huge fan of hers. My first thought was: “why is she here? Didn’t fashion week just wrap up?” I figured she’d still be in Europe somewhere, so I asked her immediately: “did you just get back from europe’s fashion week?” and she replies: “oh yes, I got back not too long ago. And I’m just…roaming around...” she giggled throughout the conversation, then I tell her I recently flipped through her Australian issue of Vogue from last December not too long ago, and how I thought she did a fantastic job chronicling the shows both here in the states and in Europe from last season (trying to make small talk…), and she breaks out into a huge grin and says: “oh dear…thank you! Haha I haven’t even flipped through the entire thing myself to be honest with you”. So at this point we’re walking through the parking lot/front entrance part of the Cooper Union school, and I had to get to class. So the next part was a bit awkward, because we were sort of walking side by side in conversation, but we’re strangers so there wasn’t much to say…so at the same time, we’re like: “well it was nice meeting you” and I walk right, she walks left (around this van). But eventually we ended up walking in the same general direction. Since that’s usually so awkward (especially after goodbyes), I kept my pace ahead of her. At one point, though, I look back just to see where she is (this is around Astor), and I see that she’s put on the hood of her hoodie. I suppose she didn’t want anyone else to recognize her. This made me wonder if the two people she was talking to before (on my block) were friends or also just strangers who approached her on the street.

So that was our encounter. She’s very pleasant, a bit shy, and ironically appeared to be pretty foreign to having people approach her. I felt as if I caught her off guard, but she was extremely friendly and modest. Her accent is still there, definitely, especially when she laughs and stresses certain syllables (ie: “oh dear…”), but it’s lessened quite a bit from when she first came to the states.

And for those of you who are interested in what she was wearing, (I can hardly remember because I was so shocked) she had on those gray converse sneakers with jeans (they were actually very standard, didn’t appear to be superior denim from what I could tell) that were a bit on the flare side. She had on a hoodie with a twill coat over it, a shoulder bag (can't recall which one specifically, but it was big) and had on absolutely no makeup. She was so adorable and beautiful at the same time – extremely natural, with her hair half way up and very wispy.

So there you have it! Overall a very pleasant person and experience…feel free to ask more questions if you’d like...=)

^^ Thanks so much for sharing your story! I love hearing about the models in real life, they're such goddesses in print, I love to hear about the real people behind the image!
Cheers!!^_^
