Gemma lacks Kate's versatility and womanliness. She's definitely the most "interesting" doll-faced model out there (rivaled only by Jessica Stam, whom I don't really care, personally), but is ultimately still inhibited by the novelty of her look. Kate is an icon because her look is so unique that it transcends time and fashion trends.

And this is worse than chunky, trashy, coked-out demondoll-ness? Gemma's grown on me over time; I'm finally starting to get why she's such a hot commodity. Jessica's "prettier" (note use of parantheses) on a technical level, but Gemma has more of a unique, otherworldly edge.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more. Gemma has no edge. She has the same empty, passive, rubber-ducky look in all of her photos. Yes her features are weird and alien-like in shape, but they're also completely lifeless. Somebody who literally had the face of a doll down to the dead round eyes would be rather unusual looking, no? Would they be interesting to look at once you got over the initial shock? Of course not...they'd be completely boring. That's what Gemma's like.
Jessica has a certain spark that Gemma lacks.

Not to mention the fact that she looks and walks like a zombie on the runway.

Call me crazy, but I actually think Gemma is technically prettier than Stam (at least in a superficial sense). Despite her odd features, I can easily imagine her slipping into the role of a perky, blonde cheerleader type in your typical high school. Stam would have more problems blending in because her prettiness isn't apparent at first glance while Gemma looks conventionally attractive from a distance. Gemma has a better face shape and looks more feminine. I recall Jessica saying in an interview that guys paid no attention to her in school, and frankly I'm not at all surprised. Meanwhile, Gemma was rather popular from what I've read.

You're right: Gemma is technically prettier than Jessica, but that doesn't necessarily mean that she has less edge or is less interesting overall. Gemma's weirdness is soothing to look at, imo, and the way she is able to use her physical quirkiness in such an effortless and natural way is what I like most about her. Unlike fellow-"dolls" Lily Cole and Heather Marks, she doesn't just rely on her exaggerated features to get by; she has spirit, grace and charm. Jessica, on the other hand, is just...creepy. Her eyes grab your attention forcefully and immediately, but once this excitement wears off, all you're left looking at is girl who crawled out of Dr. Suess's trailer park:

It's funny because I think Gemma's the perfect example of a model who relies on her weird features only.
