the girl who fell to earth
"Gemma is on of the very few models who looks as though they come from another dimension, "says British photographer Nick Knight. Gemma Ward's other-worldly look has been the starting point for countless creative projects, form film projects and fragrance campaigns to designer's collections and magazine covers.
After appearing in her first short film at the age of 13. Gemma's set to star in
The Black Balloon, the first feature-length project of Australian filmmaker Elissa Down. In a role Down wrote especially for her, Gemma will soon play Jackie, a young girl who helps her boyfriend to accept his brother's autism. Gemma, who appeared as Heidi in Elissa's 2001 short film
Pink Pyjamas, has always said she'd love to try her hand at acting, but with her commitments on the runway, she's never found the time. Until now. It looks as though
The Black Balloon will start filming in Australia in a few months.
In just a few short years. Gemma has played muse, mannequin and cover star and, although based in New York, she's still affectionately known as the girl from Perth. But it's not just Gemma whose rise to fame has been sudden and intense. Other Australian models like Nicole Trundio are also burning brightly, and Gemma recently shot the latest Valentino campaign with Mert & Marcus with another new face. Sydney model Phillip appears in the campaign with Gemma - not bad for a young man whom, until a few months ago, was working as a street cleaner in Sydney's Redfern.
The 18 year old continues to inspire, and we see her image everywhere. To photographers, stylist, designers and filmmakers, Gemma Ward remains something of an obsession. But it's those who buy the fragrance, wear the clothes and watch the movies that have really fallen in with love with the girl from Perth. She's out of this world.
