A Mega Moment with Gemma Ward!
She's a supermodel, a surfer, and now a boxer?
(NEW YORK) She starred on our cover. She hosted our party. And now she's ready to talk: presenting more delicious dish from Daily darling (and certified supermodel) Gemma Ward!
So do we qualify as stalkers yet?
No, no, I really love The Daily! It's great to read because it's so much fun.
Maybe you can write a piece for us like you did when you guest-edited Australian Vogue...
Oh, I would really like to do more writing, actually. My sister Sophie helped me with that piece because she's also written for Australian Vogue and we were in very close contact while I was working on my piece for them. It's always great to collaborate with her, and for something so prestigious as Australian Vogue, it was an amazing experience. In some ways I've had more people approach me about how interesting the article was than a lot of other modeling I've done. It was really a dream come true.
Your career so far has been a whirlwind, have you felt yourself changing since becoming a model?
Yeah, I've matured a hell of a lot. I think back to when I first came to New York and even when I first started modeling in Australia. My parents have always been so supportive because they've also been the kind of people to make their own way in the world very early, but it was a big shock to be so on my own at first. But I'm so proud of what I've done and how far I've come from the beginning. Seeing how I can deal with everything in an adult way, I think that's been huge.
So, fellow model Caroline Winberg told us a story...
About surfing?!
Oh yeah.
That was so funny, I read in The Daily that Caroline told you that she was a better surfer than me! And I was like, "Caroline, you are very funny!" We went to Costa Rica and we went surfing quite a lot, and I will honestly tell you, on the record, that I am a better surfer than Caroline!
Oh dear...
Oh no, I love her but we're very competitive with each other about games, you know? With surfing and also with poker and now, me and her go to the same boxing studio down in the financial district called Trinity Boxing. We'll take boxing classes together.
Is that a good idea?
I don't know! It's the funniest thing because they want us to do a charity boxing match together. We're like, oh no, please don't ask us to do that because the both of us would just grill each other for the rest of our lives. "Caroline, I could beat your ***!" "No Gemma, I could beat your ***!" When we're together, we're always trying to be the best! But you know, it's only about games. We're not competitive at work at all.
Do you like her new hair?
She looks amazing in everything.
So you're at The Daily MINI party, is it good? What makes a good party?
This reminds me a little of a party I had in Australia. We had this huge party with belly dancers during dinner and all the belly dancers came around while we ate. Then we had fire-jugglers during dessert time; we just found all these complete hippies while we were traveling up the coast on the beach and we got them to come to this party. Then after the fire-jugglers, there were salsa dancers teaching us how to dance at the end. We were all awful at it but it just turned into the best night. So something along those lines.
Hippies and fire-jugglers? The secret to an amazing party?
Basically. Definitely the fire-jugglers.
