Perth’s Gemma Ward has headed up a glamorous group of Australian beauties on the red carpet at the 60th Cannes Film Festival.
A guest of French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld, Ward wore a stunning floor-length strapless gown for the premiere of French film Le Scaphandre et Le Papillon. She picked up the dress during a recent trip to India where the supermodel shot the first ever cover of new magazine Indian Vogue, and another for British Vogue.
Australian film star Toni Collette, who is on the festival’s Palme d’Or jury for the first time, joined Ward at the premiere looking gorgeous in a halter-neck dress with her hair slicked back, while Australia’s most famous “body”, Elle Macpherson, wore a slinky black number.
Ward, currently rated the world’s number one model on respected website models.com, appears in two movies to be released later this year. Australian film The Black Balloon, which stars Collette, will hit screens in September when it premieres at the Toronto Film Festival, and The Strangers, in which Ward appears alongside Liv Tyler, is set for American release in July.
The Strangers director Bryan Bertino was in Cannes with Ward.
Ward, 19, is beginning to move in film circles, recently catching the eye of heartthrob George Clooney who invited her to appear on the cover of Vanity Fair with him late last year.
Her mother, Claire Ward, recently returned home from spending a month with Ward, who is based in New York. She said Ward was “very excited about going to Cannes”.
“She is still really busy with her modelling but she has had lots of interest (from movie-makers) and is auditioning for things,” she said.
