Ward wows Black Balloon film premiere
Wednesday Feb 27 20:24 AEDT
Australian supermodel Gemma Ward has greeted by a mob scene at the Sydney premiere of her new film The Black Balloon.
Ward, Home & Away star Rhys Wakefield, co-stars Luke Ford and Erik Thomson and director Elissa Down were surrounded by clamouring photographers, fans and onlookers as they arrived at Dendy cinemas at Circular Quay.
The group posed on the red carpet for five minutes and did not speak to waiting journalists as photographers and fans pushed, shoved and yelled to get their attention.
Ward, dressed in a long pale gown, signed autographs for a couple of fans before being ushered into the screening.
Toni Collette, who also stars in the film, did not attend the premiere, but musician Josh Pyke and actress Pia Miranda turned out to see it.
Ahead of Wednesday night's premiere, Wakefield said he was nervous about walking the red carpet.
"They just freak me out," he said.
"I'll be in the car on the way and I'll be like 'Oh, my gosh'.
"But it will be cool to see the reaction of the audience."
The Black Balloon, which is based in part on director Elissa Down's family experiences, is about a teenage boy who struggles to take care of his autistic older brother.
The film opens on March 6.

She's the face of a Calvin Klein perfume, a Vogue 'It Girl' and one of the world's top 10-earning supermodels who is at home on stage and in the studio — but when it comes to kissing, Gemma Ward gets all shy.
The 20-year-old Australian model is said to have been overcome with a bout of bashfulness when she had to pucker up for her first on-screen kiss in a new film.
Ward plays school girl Jackie Ward in the flick called
The Black Balloon, due out next year.
The role required her to cosy up to
Home and Away star Rhys Wakefield for the coming-of-age drama which follows the turbulent journey of young love.
But despite the awkward moment, Ward is said to be catching up with film director Ellis Down to discuss other film prospects when she heads home this week for holidays.
And she may not have to wait long.
The Perth-born model has already starred in a yet-to-be-released film called
The Strangers, a horror flick opposite Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman.
