His bachelor days are over!

George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin are engaged.

A source with knowledge of the situation confirms Clooney popped the question and exclusively tells PEOPLE, "George and Amal are trying to keep things very low-key but they also aren't really trying to hide this, it doesn't seem. I think it's like they want the people they love to know that this is real, that they plan on being together forever."

The engagement happened "not that long ago, I think," the source adds, and the couple don't appear to have wedding plans in the works – yet.

On Thursday, the pair were spotted at Malibu hot spot Nobu with Cindy Crawford and husband Rande Gerber, who are longtime pals of Clooney's. At the dinner, Alamuddin had a conspicuous ring on her left ring finger, a different source tells PEOPLE.

In addition, two sources say that witnesses at another L.A. restaurant, Craig's, reported seeing the pair apparently celebrating their engagement with friends on Wednesday night, with Alamuddin sporting a "huge ring," according to one.

A rep for the actor has only said, "I don't comment on my client's personal life."

Clooney, 52, and Alamuddin, 36, a British attorney who specializes in international law and human rights, were first photographed stepping out together in London in October. The two have since been spotted embarking on romantic, globe-trotting jaunts.

In March, the two went on a trip to Tanzania, where they were snapped getting cozy during a safari, and they also visited the Seychelles.

A few days later, the couple stepped out together in New York City for dinner at a French restaurant.

Earlier this year, a source who has worked with Clooney, told PEOPLE: "He's with someone who is a very accomplished attorney. She isn't someone who is pursuing a career in acting or entertainment. She's on his level."

This is the stuff Harlequin romance novels are made of. Whose next? Leo?

^ ha ha... Well at least she's both beautiful and smart (I am assuming, given her profession). Congrats to them.

Can we start taking bets on "how long will it last?" here?
Can't even say congratulations, really no point

My favorite coverage of the engagement was on last night's SNL weekend update when Cecily Strong said, "This week, Amal Alamuddin, a brilliant Oxford educated human rights lawyer and former UN advisor... settled for a 52 year old man." It's so spot on and incredibly true!

According to the Vanity Fair article, his mother said, "On an intellectual level, they are equals." Somehow, I doubt that.

^^ LOL that's hilarious. I read your comment in her voice.

I still wont believe it until it actually happens.

It does sound like a harlequin romance novel. He's usually quite private so it's weird.

If they're going through the engagement maybe 2-3 years, how long were Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes together?

My eyes just nearly rolled out of my head at this

I get that he is considered a "smart" actor and I could look at him all day long. But this a woman speaks three languages and has degrees from Oxford and NYU. And this is a description of her career :

Amal specialises in international law, human rights, criminal law and extradition. In the UK she has defended clients in the Magistrates Court and Crown Court and has represented clients in both Part 1 and Part 2 extradition cases. In 2011 Amal was part of the team of barristers representing Julian Assange in resisting an extradition request by Sweden. She is currently also engaged in advisory and fact-finding work related to human rights in the Middle East region. This includes advising the Royal Court of Bahrain on institutional and legal reforms to ensure compliance with international human rights; work as the Rapporteur of the International Bar Asssociation Human Rights Institute in Cairo; and advice to an NGO regarding the obligations of Libya to cooperate with the International Criminal Court proceedings in respect of Saif Al Islam Gaddafi. She is also part of the legal team representing the government of Cambodia in a case involving a territorial dispute with Thailand at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. She has previously worked as a legal adviser to judges at the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and as senior legal adviser to the prosecutor of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon."

In what world does all of that make you on George Clooney's level? He wishes he was on HER level. And I hate the implication that gives about his other girlfriends. Women he chose who may not have been rocket scientists but they are who and what he wanted. It suggests that he was just toooooo good for them. So annoying

^ ITA. It just highlights how sexist our societies are. Look how hard a woman has to work and how accomplished she has to be before she is seen as his equal. I'm pretty sure he's not her mental equal and IMO he's not hot either. But she obviously sees something in him, so good luck to them!

His mother said, she's accomplished, the implication being that George Clooney is accomplished. He's one of the absolute biggest stars in the world, has been for over two decades now. There are probably less than ten actors who could be in his league at the moment. He's also a writer, a director, a producer and is involved with all kinds of social organizations and charities. His name is known (and mostly loved) all over the world. If anything, the mother is selling her son short.

There are literally THOUSANDS of people graduating Oxford or NYU each year. There are countless diplomats/politicians/lawyers/other professionals across the world who work on different international issues/disputes. That's not to say what she's done is not impressive, or that she's not accomplished. She absolutely is. But, to downplay his achievements while acting like she's one in 500 millions (which is really what he is) is silly.

^hehehe out of the two of them he´s the one with like instant worldwide name recognition so it´s nice that for a change they turned the tables on him.
