on the technical point, i completely agree. unfortunately, fashion's not simply about technique, even at its most pure. i've seen his pieces up close -- even had a chance to try on a few things here and there -- and while some of them struck me as remarkable, none of them had that swoon-inducing quality as some of the other less-technically-accomplished houses have. for my money, i'd rather own three pairs of neil barrett pants over one well-crafted ferre leather jacket. i'm more apt to buy a dolce and gabbana suit not because its altogether nicer, but because of the aspirational quality of that brand.

i tend to think that only the disproportionately self-confident -- not to mention inordinately wealthy -- could partake in ferre because there's just always been something else that whets the appetite a little more for those of us who have to budget.

Well yes, i can see where you are coming from,
i own a few Neil Barrett pieces Myself and i really like them, but all of us approach fashion from a different perspective,
i was a tailor before i knew anything about Aesthetic design and the aspirational/ desirability element of fashion.
I approach fashion in the same way the Pythogoreans approached mathematics, as a subject in and of itself, without the considerations of its wider context or applications in other areas of life.
and thats the perspective from which i view the works of many designers, Chalayan is another perfect example, albeit completely different from Ferre.
wherein the designer is to some degree, approaching his/her work with an higher level of creativity/ innovation/ technical mastery than just creating beautiful garments that appeals to a customer. In must be noted that sometimes on the surface, this is not clearly seen and can only be understood by those who have such knowledge, or care about this aspect of the work
(the same way a doctor is more interested that you are healthy rather than sexy!, because he has that kind of knowledge)
In the end His lasting legacy will be that he created (like Cristobal Balenciaga) garments that others can reference time and time agaain for thier technical mastery and brilliance, more than thier "of the now" appeal

Nearly ten years on, I still love this collection (the last by the master!) I have and still wear several pieces from it, including the bags (the suede/nappa tote and the exotic duffle from the runway), and still enjoy the fun, technical details, and exoticism of the whole collection. Nobody could top Ferre!
