Alexander McQueen’s Givenchy Spring/Summer 1998 Haute Couture show ‘The Japanese Garden’ for Givenchy was presented at Paris Fashion Week. This show was comprised predominantly of elaborately embellished and embroidered dresses, while McQueen showcased his iconic dramatic theatrical style through the use of lavish materials, such as lace and satin. Key garments included entirely beaded dresses while floral designs were particularly prominent. Some of McQueen's designs were influenced by Japan with kimono jackets and a Japanese dragon embroidered design, alongside ball gowns and a plastic transparent bodice with butterflies. Accessories saw dramatic metal and beaded headpieces, small handbags and pouch bags, layered hanging necklaces, a metal-linked balaclava, a beaded fringed parasol, heeled shoes, and sandals. Models were styled in the same theatrical manner with blunt haircuts, some with long ponytail extensions, with bright bold eyeshadow.
