The Prince and the Showgirl
At first, Grace Kelly didn't want to go to Cannes. But The Country Girl, for which she had just snagged an Oscar, was being screened, so finally she agreed: "Well, why not?" While at the festival, friends Olivia de Havilland and Pierre Galante suggested the detour of a relaxing sojourn in nearby Monaco. It was there that she met Europe's most eligible bachelor, Prince Rainier III. For that fateful encounter on the morning of May 6, 1955, the blonde Philadelphian wore a floral-print, black tulle evening gown—the power was out at the hotel and she couldn't iron her day dress. No matter, Rainier made her his princess 11 months later.
