It's quite stunning if you think about it. She was in Hollywood by 1951, and a Princess by 1956 done with the film business. In that brief, brief time she managed to appear in over ten films, three of which were directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It may not have been a long career, but it is a noteworthy one.
She was born Grace Patricia Kelly on November 12, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to wealthy parents. She managed to be schooled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts before making her way to New York to work as a model and aspiring actress. She managed to get some work and by 1949 had appeared on Broadway in a bit part.

By 1951 though she had moved, Hollywood was the place to be and it turns out she was right. At the age of 22 she landed her first film role, in Henry Hathaway's Fourteen Hours. The next year would be even better as she landed a role opposite Gary Cooper in High Noon. There was no looking back from that point on. She would star with Clark Gable in Mogambo in 1952, land her first film (Dial M For Murder) with Alfred Hitchcock the next year and repeat this effort opposite James Stewart in Rear Window in 1954.
1954 was a banner year for Grace Kelly as she was officially considered a star with her short but successful list of films, but that was nothing considering what came next. The industry came back and awarded her an Oscar for her performance in The Country Girl.
1955 would prove to be one cited often when it came to her retirement and death. She fell in love with the Riveria during production of To Catch A Thief and the film is laden with little ironies in light of later events. The main one being where Grace Kelly and Cary Grant pull off the road for a picnic with in the film is said to be the exact spot or relatively close to where Princess Grace had her fatal crash driving home to Monaco (1982).
She would make High Society and The Swan (a film about a woman marrying a prince) for 1956 but would also retire that same year having met and married Prince Rainier who would not have an actress as a wife. Apparently to this day, Grace Kelly films are still banned within Monaco. There was a brief time she had hoped to return to acting for Alfred Hitchcock in Marnie, but the people of Monaco didn't want their princess playing a thief and romancing Sean Connery.
She had three children with Prince Rainer, Princess Caroline (1957), Prince Albert (1958) and Princess Stephanie (1966).
