So I read up on these new smoothies called "Green Smoothies" and I was wondering if anyone drinks them? I want to try to do a 3-4 day detox with them but I wanted to ask people who already try/have tried them if this would be beneficial to me.

Apparently, if you don't know what a green smoothie is, it is a smoothie consisting of the following:

-Lettuce
-Spinach
-Baby Greens
-Some combinations of fruits

Opinions? Stories?

Thank you :D

I love green smoothies! I'm not too picky about the ingredients though, I just take whatever leafy greens I have at home (mostly spinach) and mix it with things like pineapple, melon, apples, pears, avocado, lemon, ginger... The important thing is to make sure you're always putting more fruit than greens in, or it won't taste good.

Can someone explain this exactly?
I mean..do you "cook" the spinach before? Sorry if that's a "blonde" (I actually AM blonde haha) question. I drank a few of those when I lived in the US - but I really want to try it at home!
Thank you in advance!

Haha! I buy raw, fresh baby spinach and just shove it in the blender!

If you're interested in green smoothies, ohsheglows (a healthy living/vegan blog) has a ton of recipes - she calls them green monsters. I tried the spinach/banana/soy milk combo and personally I'm really not a fan, I might try them again though.

I put grapes, blueberries, 3 strawberries, and 5 pieces of lettuce in mine this morning. Haven't tasted it yet (it's waiting for me in my fridge when I get home from school) but it didn't look so hot

Do the drinks tend to look a little..well..like vomit?

Sorry for being blunt :p

^ Well... I just made one (thank you for the inspirational thread!) with strawberries, one banana, rice milk, little pure coconut water, spinach and its super super yummy.

I always mean to get around to making things like that, but never do it. I'm sure I've used spinach in a drink with fruits though and it was good, especially since mostly you can only taste the fruit in it.

Well, I can't imagine the taste being too bad, but if you want to make it look prettier, try using fruits that are green, yellow or clear - like pineapple, honeydew melon, apples, pears, mango, green grapes, bananas, avocado... Along with the greens, that should give it a clear, beautiful green colour :)

I've actually been making green smoothies for a few weeks now. They are really yummy! Sometimes they don't turn out looking so appetizing but once you get over that they are really good.

i know this is a green smoothies thread-

has anyone ever drank coconut water? is it good. whats up with this craze? any noticeable changes?

I drink it... It's pure coconut water, I love it. I have nice skin to begin with - but I heard it's really healthy and gives you a nice glow.

I'm obsessed with coconut water. It's a natual isotonic so it's great to have it after your workout routine. It also prevents dehydration so I guess that's why is good for skin? I know models drink it all the time but they have great skin either way.

When I have had raw spinach, it has always made me sick. Any ideas for a good substitute?

I've also heard coconut water is good, but I haven't tried it. What is it supposed to do for your skin? Keep it well hydrated? Or is it more than that?

^ Try kale. It's really really healthy! :flower:

I am super into green smoothies & just fruit smoothies in general! I find them fantastic for your health and an excellent way to get lots of fruits and veggies into your diet if you have trouble with that (I do!!!).

My favorite combination is frozen blueberries, frozen raspberries, acai, ground flax seed, a handful of baby spinach, and a little plain Greek yogurt. Sometimes I'll add vanilla protein mix. The blueberry is so overpowering that you can't taste the greens AT ALL!

Just made another smoothie today.

- baby carrots
- baby spinach
- frozen peaches
- frozen strawberries
- Jillian Michaels vanilla whey protein
- coconut water

So delicious!!!

spinach and carrots are great in smoothies - I used to work in a smoothie cafe. I would recommend not blending them with anything too sweet though, then it tastes funny. Stick with milder tastes like blueberries, soy/coconut milk, etc.

I second the kale suggestion. I've always heard that you need to do at least one dark leafy green (kale, spinach) but to mix it with a light green too, so celery or cucumber.

I buy a bunch of frozen fruit and just rotate. Pineapple and mango are delicious.
