Gucci for the Oscars

ELLEN’S OSCAR THREADS: Gucci has made Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres three outfits to wear in sequence during the three-hour Academy Award telecast on Sunday, plus another two for her musical numbers: velvet, wool and satin tuxedos for her emcee duties, plus two vest and pant ensembles for her song-and-dance routines. The color palette is midnight blue, red, cream and white.

i am interested in the gucci part of the conversation...
i am interested in the fact that she chose to wear such an historically overtly feminine and sexy label...
also wondering if she wore gucci in her recent W mag shoot and if this influenced her decision...
and what this means to the brand!!

gucci is an interesting choice considering they are well known for their sexy dresses, etc...
at least in terms of womenswear...
though they do cut a mean men's suit...

WHATEVER the case,it's not really a big surprise to me. i know Ellen only dons trouser-suits so i don't expect a shock move for her in that respect. it's actually a great idea to head that way since most all who do more glamour concsious almost always come in the way of dresses or skirts.

I saw her in some magazine- I guess it was W, and she was all made up and wearing dresses, and to me she just didn't look right. I think some people are just born to wear suits, and she is one of them

i only saw one shot from that spread on television(don't really look at W)and it was a tailored jacket....

it would be nice if she did a dress or something that was tailored....like some things in Olivier's Nina Ricci collection this season. Or Tisci at Givenchy HC(he actually did some great suits)....or even Gaultier(she could pull off Gaultier,i think). but she's never worn dresses,as far as i know. she always said she only feel comfortable in a suit.

W: We initially asked you to wear a dress. You considered it, but in the end you were passionate about not doing it.
ED: I know what this magazine is. It's a beauty magazine; it's a fashion magazine. For me to even be considered and asked to be on the cover—it's huge…. When I [first] thought about doing it, I thought, Okay, I'll be open to this. I'll play dress-up. Then I thought, I just don't feel comfortable in it. I don't want to apologize for who I am.

W: Do you enjoy fashion?
ED: I usually wear Jil Sander, or I wear Marc Jacobs, or I wear Viktor & Rolf…. I love Raf Simons, but I didn't know he was even doing the [Jil Sander] collection. I like Neil Barrett. I love clothes, so when I wear clothes, they're usually somebody's. You know, I'm not wearing Kmart.

W: Do you think that's the perception?
ED: Whenever Portia and I are on the red carpet, they're yelling out for her to tell them what she's wearing. But nobody cares [about what I'm wearing] because I have a suit on, even if it's a Gucci suit. That to me is frustrating, because I put effort into getting ready too. But I guess it's not as important, and I'm not as dressed up somehow. I also feel myself more of a person than a gender. When people show me clothing that seems very, very feminine, it's hard for me to embrace that, because it just doesn't feel like me…. It was fun [for the shoot] having somebody do that to my hair, and do that makeup. But would I want to do that every single day? No.

W: What will you wear to the Oscars?
ED: Everybody's sending me stuff. Gucci sent me this amazing package with all kinds of different designs and different fabrics, in a beautiful box with my name engraved in gold plate. I picked some fabrics, and they're making me something. Zac Posen made me a gorgeous tuxedo. Viktor & Rolf is making me something…. I wasn't planning on changing because it's just different suits, but I may do it, because I'd like to thank them all for making me stuff, for wanting to do that.

i hadn't even thought about what ellen might wear to the oscars but this is definitely making me curious...

i highly doubt we'll ever see her in a dress..
though i would love to see that i admire her for sticking to what she feels comfortable in..

it sounds like she's going to have some great stuff made for her--we'll see if gucci will give her more "sex appeal" or whatever you want to call it...
i would love to see her in a more feminine look either way..

makes me want to tune into the oscars to see if she does a wardrobe change
i wonder what the viktor & rolf looks like

I read it somewhere that she was crazy about Helmut Lang. Whenever she went to Barney's, she always ran straight to HL floor.

and of COURSE she wears jil sander.......
i was going to suggest that..
but i don't think it's 'slick' enough for an awards show....

^you know she has always been a huge fan of fashion...progressive,interesting talents. i know she also wears alot of Dries and Comme des Garçons.

i love hearing that she's a big fan of Raf!

i'd love to see her wearing Demeulemeester. She could pull that off quite well and still maintain her mannish style.
