Yvan Mispelaere

PARIS — Yvan Mispelaere, slated to take a bow at the end of the Chloé show here on Oct. 7, is also bowing out of the company and heading to Gucci, WWD has learned.

Reached on Monday, Mispelaere confirmed he starts at Gucci in Florence after he finishes up his Chloé duties. He said his title would be design director, working under creative director Frida Giannini.

The move could turn up the heat on Chloé to name a designer successor to Phoebe Philo, who resigned from the Paris-based house in January to spend more time with her family and her new baby.

Asked about Mispelaere's exit, Chloé chairman and chief executive officer Ralph Toledano said, "We don't comment on rumors."

However, he said Chloé would appoint a new creative director shortly after its show in Paris. He also reiterated that "two possibilities are considered: internal and external."

Mispelaere has long been a key member of Philo's team, and came out at the end of the runway in March in Paris alongside two colleagues — Blue Farrier and Adrian Appiolazza. More recently, he was given credit for Chloé's pre-spring collection, which was well received by buyers and press, according to the company.

Sales at Chloé more than doubled last year, and parent Compagnie Financière Richemont has said the firm's momentum has been unaffected by the departure of Philo and is growing "beyond expectations."

Before joining Chloé, Mispelaere was the creative director of Louis Féraud, but he spent much of his design career in Italy, working for Prada in Milan and Valentino in Rome.

Known for his tailoring and intricate dressmaker detailing, Mispelaere joins Gucci as it enjoys strong sales momentum under Giannini's direction. Gucci declined to comment on changes in its design department.

holy crap!......

seriously! It's a big WTF. But oh well. I'm sad to see that he won't be continuing the great work at Chloe but hopefully this will mean bigger oppurtunities to show his talent.

ahh i'm so happy for Yvan and so sad for the Chloe label..
keeping fingers crossed that he will do a great job at Gucci

it was obvious that this guy can go very far, congrats :lucky:

ahhhhhhhhhhhh.........!!!!!!!!!!
in a way it sucks cause i really wanted to see him head up chloe
but in a way it is good because he will add something special to Gucci.
the only problem is that he is still working under somebody at Gucci.
i think he is too Good a talent to not be given a job where he is at the helm.

ok- where is that thread about who is going to chloe?????

so- it' not roland mouret- we know that now...
maybe it WILL BE JAYNE MAYLE???...:o

"holy crap", "big WTF"...yes, all those things.
so sad to see all this turmoil at Chloe. if i were them, i'd have a job fair:p.
i mean, HOW many uber talented unknowns are there, right?:ninja:

I think i hope not, both for chloe and mayle's sakes. although given the insane popularity of Mayle, at least here, the combination might be a good business venture.

i find this rather disappointing--i've been enjoying chloe lately. :(

the last two seasons Chloé ruled!!!! If the man was responsible for it, then i'm worried for Chloé!!!

i don't know ...
there are certainly a lot of unknowns...
but seeing a lot of shows by young designers...
i wouldn't say that very many of them are all that talented really...:ermm:..
great talent is few and far between....and it also takes years to develop in most cases...

i am going to bet they promote someone internally....

:innocent:

i think that the era of the greatly talented designer is over.
and there will be less and less designers that have any real talent coming out.
the problem is that a lot of schools are training people to fit certain jobs in the industry and not to go ino business for themselves.
after they work for certain people it kinda adds sometimes a certain weight to them that limits creativity.
fashion is increasingly becoming a profession for the rich and the elite, as it is extremely expensive to run a fashion business
i myself could not be a designer if i were not technically skilled in many of the things that are required to run a fashion business. and even then, i dont have the time to do everything myself.

i will do a little math to give an example of what im saying

20 outfit collection= 6 dress looks+ 14 separates (tops and bottoms)
if the separates consist of only two peices, we have 28 pieces which= 28 patterns

28 + 6 =34
34 patterns at $250 per pattern =$8,500
you havent bought fabric as yet
the samples havent been sewn as yet
the lookbook ,
the show
the pr
the showroom
the cost of running a business outside of these expenses
and you havent sold one item of clothing as yet.
and this is every season.

with all of these things
designers are scared to take risks, to experiment, as this could lead to fatal mistakes
the aforementioned things are critical to developing real talent.
there are many other variables that i wont go into now
after all Galliano, McQueen Gaultier and most all the great designers apprenticed at places where real clothes were made and in a time when fashion was more hand on than it is now.
even Mispelaere worked for Claude Montana (arguably the greatest designer of the 80's glory days of fashion)

i just wish mispeleare all the best , i think chloe made a big mistake
maybe him being there, he knows they were not going to appoint him permanently so, he took the Gucci job
i would do the same thing,
no direspect to miss mayle as i think she is a nice lady, but..............
she cannot even dream of the caliber of designer that Yvan is....................

Noooooooooooooooooooo!!

I loved what Yvan was doing at Chloe', and was looking forward to follow what he would do with the brand, big mistake on Chloe's part... I'm curious to see what he comes up with at gucci.

from Chloe to Gucci?! That's like going from Chanel to Cavalli!
I really hope jane mayle doesn't head chloe.
