Mother to Mother
Though the legendary Chateau Marmont Hotel is rarely referred to as a family-friendly place, it was the perfect setting for Hollywood stylist Andrea Lieberman's Marie Antoinette-themed baby shower. Nicole Richie, Ellen Pompeo and Gwen Stefani were among the glam guests who gathered inside the hotel's Bungalow 1 for afternoon tea, hosted by publicist Margaret Maldonado and jeweler Mouawad. "Andrea is like a New York version of me, but way cooler and more talented," said California girl Stefani (in Diane von Furstenberg). "The fact that we’re pregnant at the same time is such a gift."
Boys Allowed
Bucking the tradition of a girls' only shower, Lieberman included Gwen's husband, rocker Gavin Rossdale, and their son Kingston on the guest list. When Gwen suddenly realized she'd forgotten to include a card with her family's gift, Gavin gave their host a hint. "You’ll know which one is from us," he told Lieberman of the present—baby clothes from Gwen's Harajuku Lovers collection.
Meeting of the Moms
"I'm not really an advice giver," said Stefani, when asked if she had any wisdom to impart to Lieberman. Still, motherhood was the hot topic of the afternoon. "We've been sitting here going back and forth, talking about it," said Richie.
The Decor
The opulence of the Marie Antoinette-era was balanced by kid-friendly accessories. The furniture from the Chateau Marmont's Bungalow 1 was replaced with gold sofas, Chiavari chairs and small round tables covered with lush shantung silk linens by costume designer Linda Stokes—who has created wardrobe costumes for Gwen Stefani, Madonna and Janet Jackson. Overhead, a clothesline was festooned with tiny t-shirts, dresses and beanies from Fred Segal Life Size. Floral arrangements in pink and ivory hues were provided ny L.A. florist The Empty Vase.
The Menu
Guests snacked on sweet treats from the Cookie Sandwich Co., chocolatier Boule, and bakery Sweet Lady Jane. The Chateau provided avocado and cucumber tea sandwiches, butter cookies filled with jelly, and a fruit platter of blueberries, blackberries and strawberries. For the non-tea totalers, Perrier-Jouet Grand Brut champagne was also on hand.
