When I had extremely short hair I used hair clay to get the maximum hold without any shiny-ness added. It worked fairly well on my hair since wax is just too light for me.

depending on your hair texture (thick or thin), if you have thin hair and don't want your hair weighed down, any sort of spray wax is good... doesn't add too much weight, but holds hair and isn't left all shiny.. paul mitchell has a really good spray wax...
